Babies: 3 - 6 Months

THUNK

All...night...long.

My son does this thing at night where he raises both of his legs at the same time, REALLY high and then slams them down.  Since he's in a pnp bassinet it's really loud.  One night he did it so loud I thought someone had broken in.  I'll wake up, ready to start a feed/change and he'll be sleeping, and continue to THUNK in his sleep.  I'm not sure what to do, we thought at first it was because he hated his swaddlers so we started putting him in pajamas.  He definitely likes the pajamas, but it didn't stop the thunking.  We could move him to his crib in a separate room but we're worried about the SIDS risk because he's only 15 weeks!

My LO is 17 weeks and does this too. She always has. She's been in her crib in her own room since 9 weeks and I don't hear it as much, which means I sleep better. I still hear it over the monitor though, enough to wake me when she really gets going. I don't know how she stays asleep through it!

ETA she has never been swaddled (hated it) and sleeps in just a sleeper, sometimes with a sleep sack if it's chilly. She does it no matter what she's wearing.

  • You guys can stop saying weeks now lol

And yes, it's normal for babies to do that. I usually hold his legs down till he's asleep. It's all just them playing with their bodies.
  • My LO used to do this a lot! He's now 7 months and he stopped doing it. I think he found the repetitive motion would help him go back to sleep or something. Sometimes he would do it in his sleep and it would wake him up. It drove me crazy! Either way I didn't try to swaddle him or anything I just let him do it...

  • Our little guy does this all the time, usually as he's falling asleep...it can be really loud, lol.  He sleeps in a pack and play in our room, so we got a padded cover that fits tightly, and it has helped to make the noise much quieter.
  • My LO does this ALL night long!  I asked our Ped about it and he said its completely normal.  It keeps me up most of the night because she sleeps in a co-sleeper next to our bed.    Some nights are better than others, but last night she did it A LOT and mama is tired!  She goes to bed between 7-8 and sleeps until 6:30-7 AM, with no night wakings (except when she wakes me up with the thumping).  If she does wake herself up with the thumping, she settles herself down with no intervention needed from us, which makes us happy.  I hope its a phase that will pass!

  • Hehe LO does this. We put her in her own room by 3 weeks. it doesn't increase the risk of SIDS-babies are loud, I can't sleep through her noisy butt.
