BTDT mom of breech babies...

Are there any MoM out there that delivered their twins vaginally but the 1st twin was breech? I ask this because my OBGYN said it would be an automatic c-section because they want to make sure both babies fit through the pelvis. I get this concept and I think it is TOTALLY valid. However, my first baby was almost 9 lbs and my all natural labor and delivery was 4 hours long. I told him "If you think these babies are going to 9lbs a piece you had better put me out of my misery now!" He laughed and said "We'll have to see."   FWIW, I hate when they say that!

Re: BTDT mom of breech babies...

  • My Baby A was breech from 20w+. Baby B flipped every few weeks. I wanted a vaginal delivery but was told quite explicitly that as long as baby A was breech, it was an automatic c/s.

My water broke at 34w & baby a's cord prolapsed and so the whole discussion was moot anyway.

You haven't had your twins yet. Is this something your OB told you would be possible?
  • My OB informed me that there was a dramatic increase for complications (including fatal ones) if I were to attempt to deliver my babies vaginally with DD being breech (she was baby A). I ended up with a placental abruption and an emergency c-section so it was all for naught but I personally wouldn't want to have risked it. You may want to ask your doctor for the specific fears they have for attempting a vaginal breech delivery.

  • I am going to guess 99.9% of doctors will not do a vaginal birth of a breech baby A. My doc was telling me more and more it is less common to find doctors comfortable with doing a breech extraction because its rarely taught in medical school anymore! That aside, I would start to wrap your head around the idea of a c section so you are not disappointed if you have one in the end! Sorry I don't have BTDT experience yet!

  • I had my boys by C section, but my impression is that there's a lot more to delivering a Baby A that's breech than just hoping they fit through the pelvis. Breech extractions are possible, but risky with singletons, and having two babies in there dramatically complicates things. Many (but by no means all) doctors will attempt a breech extraction on Baby B, once vertex A has been delivered, because the complications are fewer with pulling out one baby (once the other has paved the way, so to speak), but I've only heard of a very, very small handful of cases where doctors delivered a breech A. It's very dangerous.
