When did you tell your employer?

When did you tell your employer about your pregnancy? With my first pregnancy, my boss knew right away because she'd been one of my go to people during IF treatment since she'd done it. I told my direct supervisors and folks in my group around 12 weeks after the NT scan.

My friend who was my boss last go around is now the CEO of my organization and I told her last week because she had twins and I needed a hug. I need to tell my boss/supervisors and wanted to tell them sooner because 1) I'll probably go on leave earlier than I would with a singleton (probably 34 weeks assuming all is healthy); 2) I may need to make changes to the work I do sooner than I would with a singleton; 3) more absences due to doctor's appointments; and 4) I could have to go out even earlier and I think we need to come up with a game plan for my absence and possible unplanned/immediate absence should something happen.

I just had my first regular OB appointment and scheduled my testing and some future appointments....and the twins look great are measuring perfectly on track so I don't predict that one will vanish or we'll have any immediate problems....but 8 weeks seems so early. I'm also OOT next week for work and then my boss is OOT the following week. So if I don't tell this week, I'll be about 11 weeks....but I'm worried I'll be showing by then.

So just curious when you told work?

Re: When did you tell your employer?

  • I'd talk to your friend and get her opinion.  See what she thinks.  Let her know that you want to be fair to your bosses, but aren't sure at what point to tell them.  See if she has any pointers.  Like you, I told my bosses right away, but they knew we were doing IVF so they were just waiting for the positive test results.

  • I only work 1 day/ week, so it has been fairly easy for me to hide under baggier clothes for just those few hours.  I chose to tell my boss at the beginning of this week (12 weeks), because of the same things you mentioned (possibly leaving work sooner than with my singletons, getting more obvious that I look pregnant).

  • My boss knew right away - same situation as you, he knew we were doing IF treatments.  I wanted to be up front with him and let him know ASAP.

I told the rest of my co-workers around 15 weeks (with the exception of a couple who were in the bathroom as I was puking on occasion), I was still hiding my belly with some bigger shirts and I'm sure people just thought I was gaining weight.

My boss, being a man, never talked to me about it - and I was totally ok with it.  I told him when I had appointments, he said ok, and that was that.  Especially that early.

  • I told my boss at 13 weeks because I was showing and couldn't hide it anymore.
  • I told them around 10-11 weeks, only because I was about to travel with my one-up manager, and she would have otherwise given me the side eye if I started avoiding the x-ray scanners at the airport. ;)

In any case, telling them early was a VERY good thing - they had the time they needed to line up my replacement, we started the transition process VERY early, and when the girls decided to make an early arrival, there was very little that hadn't been taken care of, so no one was left in a lurch. I'd err on the side of earlier -- twin pregnancies can be all over the place, so the sooner they're aware of what they (and you) may be in for, the better.

  • I told after I had an 8am hormonal meltdown with quite a bit of crying at my desk that I had to explain away. I think I was 10 or 11 weeks. I didn't tell coworkers until 17 weeks.
  • I told my bosses almost immediately since they knew I was going through IF treatments and because I was routinely exposed to shingles and other illnesses that were not safe for pregnant women.

I'd ask the CEO (your former boss) what she thinks!
