STM+: Storing Breastmilk in the Freezer Question

I breastfed DD for a year before weaning and storing my milk in the freezer was one of my biggest headaches. Does anyone have any tips/genius ideas for how they stored their milk? It was always a pain trying to pull the oldest milk from the back of freezer. I felt like everything always got mixed up.

Thanks!

Re: STM+: Storing Breastmilk in the Freezer Question

  • I always froze it flat in the bags and once it was frozen, tipped it on it's side.  The newest milk went in on the left and I would pull the older milk out on the right to use.

  • I used the Lasinoh bags. They were the easiest to get all the air out of and also froze the most flat IME. I used diaper boxes to store mine. I would take cardboard from any old box to make a divider in the middle of the diaper boxes to help keep the bags upright and seperate. It was easy to move the milk around and I could easily see the dates of the milk.

  • I also used the Lansinoh bags.  They really do store flat!

  • I suppose it depends on your production, but I never ever used my frozen milk. I felt like it was such a waste because I ended up having to throw out a lot of frozen milk in the end. I always used whatever I pumped at work during the day for the following day's daycare supply, and then I think I gave the daycare a frozen backup once a week just in case. That was the extent of what I used. Maybe I just wasn't organized enough....?
  • I did the gift bag trick, loved it!!
  • I'm going to try the gift bag trick next time - genius! I always stored flat and wrote the date on the bag. I pumped 80oz so me and DH could go to NYC one weekend! It took forever lol.

  • I froze flat then packed 10-12 into a big ziplock bag and labelled it with the date.  When taking milk out, I always made sure to use the oldest milk first.  It worked well for me and I had over a 1000 oz of frozen milk in my deep freezer at one point.

  • Lansinoh bags here too! I used the 12 pack soda can box thing that was mentioned above. I bought soda just for those boxes! I cut the tops off and put the oldest milk in the front. It was SO easy and organized! I tried the gift bag thing but I always ripped the bags at some point in time so the soda box worked best for me.
