12 Weeks Pregnant

anyone else starving??

i'm 12 weeks pregnant and in the last week or so i started getting really hungry. i mean wake up in the middle of the night, can't go back to sleep, dream of breakfast HUNGRY. anyone else experiencing this yet? i hear that ravenous hunger starts around week 14 or 16, so don't know why mine is starting so early. i already put on 6 lbs, so i am trying really hard to watch what i eat and make good choices. and now that my ms has subsided and actually have some energy, i started walking 30 min every day again. but i'm having a hard time finding satisfying snacks/foods to keep hunger in check, especially at night. a banana sometimes works, but last night at midnight i actually had to get up make myself a sandwich, i was so hungry.

i'm worried about gaining too much weight so what are some healthy, yet satisfying snacks you found?? nuts, yogurt, fruit don't really cut it. i mean they work for 30-45 min and then i'm hungry again.

thanks!!

  • Aim for foods with fat, fiber and protein as those will help you feel full. Fruit is good for you but pretty high in calories because of all the natural sugars. Low fat foods are often filled with sugar and end up being as high in calories but not as filling. I always feel full longer when I have a cheese omelet rather than cereal for breakfast. At night when I'm hungry I try to eat vegetables, either bell peppers or one of those steam in the microwave sides.

Stay away from sugary foods, especially soda and the holiday cookies because these will drop your blood sugar shortly after eating them, making you hungry again sooner. Also, your body can develop an addiction to sugar and make you crave it all the time.

Don't feel guilty about all the snacking, though, because your body is probably trying to tell you what it needs. :)

  • I was having this same issue at weeks 9 and 10, I am 12 now. I guess you have to keep trying foods until something works. I found that peanut butter crackers, fig newtons, and or a glass of milk was enough to get me back to sleep. Not sure it's the healthiest but it worked. It has pretty much passed but I still have the crackers and newtons by my bed just in case, easier to go back to sleep too! I would recommend asking your doctor that way they can tell you healthy options and like the one lady said protein sticks with you longer according to my doctor. Best of luck and congrats!
  • I've been crazy hungry almost the whole pregnancy.  I am officially 12 weeks today.  As for healthy snacks that will help keep you full longer I turn to PB&Js or an apple and peanut butter that way you get the protein which will fill you up longer and also the vitamins from the fruit. Also cottage cheese, its full of protein and calcium and will help to fill you up, if you don't like the taste (after a while of eating it it can be a bit bland) add some preserves, jelly, or chunks of fruit, it will make it more like a parfait.  Also smoothies have become my new best friends because you can pack them with all sorts of fruits and even veggies that are good for you, throw in some greek yogurt for extra protein and drink it right up.
  • Glad I'm not alone! I swear I'm always hungry! Especially at work! I usually get to work between 430630 in the morning and eat so many times during my shift! The other day I ate a bagel which normally can keep me full for hours and was starving by my next break! I also had TWO verrrry detailed dreams about frozen yogurt last night and now am craving it so badly! I wish I could get some but I've got to focus on saving money! Ugh
  • Oh my God, me too. I've been dreaming about food every night!

I bought a huge box of granola bars from Sam's Club and drink a cup of tea to feel full.

  • I was always hungry in  my first pregnancy, as in, if I didn't eat every couple of hours (from before I even knew I was pregnant!), I felt like I would pass out.  I'm in my second pregnancy now, and the opposite is true, nothing sounds good to eat, I get full easily and sometimes I have no appetite at all.

I never really found low calorie snacks that satisfied last pregnancy, so I gained weight that I really didn't want to.  I haven't lost that weight yet, but I'm also not gaining yet this pregnancy when I had already gained 5-10 lbs last time.  So, I wonder if that's what my body needed to support a healthy baby?

  • Don't worry. I've been starving since week 6. I usually eat lots of  fruit between larger (not as healthy as I'd like to admit) meals. Bananas, oranges, strawberries, grapes, etc. I feel like I've eaten a Mt. Everest amount of food over the past couple weeks, but I've only gained 3 lbs so far. So I guess its working lol.
  • I'm constantly starving as well. Have been the entire pregnancy. Have to eat literally every hour. It's ridiculous. I have no idea if I've gained anything, I don't weight myself and haven't been to the doctor yet. But I work hard to make the food count. Fortunately, anything sweet is AWFUL so I can't eat that!

Yes! I've been eating constantly.  I keep bringing what I think is a large amount of snacks with me to work...and then, presto! they disappear! ugh.  I'm actually tired of eating sometimes, but I'm so hungry I can't help it!

Also, I never really got morning sickness, so  I've definitely gained weight.  I'm hoping I'll have enough energy in the second trimester to start working out more.

  • I'm hungry too but it's because my diet is so limited to crackers n soups n cold ice water. So these things are barely sufficient but can't eat anything else. Vomit everything else I tried. So I'm hungry consistently, well more like 45 mins after I eat. It sucks it really does. I don't look forward to eating much, because after eating the same things for weeks they get a little gross out to me. So I'm looking forward to eating normally again. I've lost 11lbs so far.... N that sucks cz I want a healthy baby.
  • Yes, Ive been starving since week 5. Im 12 weeks now and my appetite is still massive as ever. I eat about every 1 1/2 - 2 hours, whatever I can get my hands on & I eat it like I havent eaten in weeks. Ive already gained over 6 lbs, maybe I should slow down, but its hard. Ive never LOVED food like I do right now,

I'm starving too! I am eating around 6 meals a day (smaller portions of course) and I find that greek yogurt with granola and fruit fills me up the best. I also carry granola bars with me and this helps a lot. Surprisingly I've only gained 1.6 pounds since the five week mark.

I always want nachos no matter where I am but since they aren't always accessible I don't get to eat them as often as I'd like.
