Hi, in the last two days our DS just stopped taking from the breast and won't drink fm the bottle. It's a struggle to get him to eat. Anyone have this issue? DS is just shy of 8 weeks old.

Tia!

UPDATE:

So we saw the doctor today,. Pedi. DS has started to lose weight, so he has not gained anything in a month he started to lose weight. I had taken so pics of his stools as well. She sent me to the GI doctor. He was diagnosed with a milk allergy.

The rash he had on his face and it spread to other parts was misdiagnosed as newborn acme. It was really an allergic reaction to the milk.

Now I am on a nondairy diet and when I need to supplement with formula he is on special formula.

Thanks for everything. It has been a long couple of days.

  • I have heard babies may start refusing a bottle from 8-12 weeks. My LC says they get "obsessed with the breast".

However, if your LO also won't take a boob, you should probably call pedi.

  • I already called the pedi. They sent me to urgent care. They aren't sure why he isn't taking either the breast or bottle. He has only gained two ounces in a month and they are suspecting milk protein allergy.

They want me to just pump for now and put him on alimentum to see if that helps.. And if it doesn't improve we have to go in tomorrow... If it improves we can wait until Tuesday.

I'm scared and I don't know what to do.

  • Our lo still took bottle even when she had milk protein allergy. The only way we knew she had it was because of mucus and blood in her stool. We switched her to soy and she's doing good now. Does lo not like the nipple shape on the bottle? I hope it gets better, t&p.

  • Have you tried a cup? Is it just not as frequent or is it nothing at all?

Each one of the kids had different versions of reflux and milk protein. Both the older ones did well on soy. Ds2 was the only one I've bf. I really wanted to do it and it was very important to me that I did. I was thinking it was stress when he stopped taking the breast, bc he stopped taking it yesterday morning and all the kids were home.

For the bottle, he has been on the same one for a couple of weeks. Since the beginning of the month. It was one that the LC recommended since we had to supplement with formula. He has taken that one and others for the last 8 weeks with no issues. We have medals, born free, dr. Browns and playtex. When he is really hungry, we can get him to take a little bit from the hospital nipples and then he won't take anymore until the next time he gets to a point.

He also has decided that no paci either. This all happened at the same time.
  • No advice but my LO is 8 weeks as of yesterday and yesterday and today is having a super hard time at breast. He's always nursed like a champ and we've never had a problem but these last two days he's been ripping his head off and getting super irritated and it's very out of character.
    T&Ps for you and LO!

Haven't tried a cup. He won't suck anymore.
  • Id try a cup, and also check for thrush and make sure he's breathing ok through his nose.

  • Urgent care doctor checked for thrush.. Nothing. He seems to breathing ok.
  • Did they check for an ear infection? My daughter would refuse to nurse when she had one.

  • I assume urgent care checked out his entire mouth for any type of sore, ears for infection and nose? I'm sorry you are going through this, I can't imagine how scary it is. Sorry I don't have advice...t&p's everything works itself out soon.
  • Kellymom.com has some info on nursing strikes, maybe check that out? Sorry I'm mobile so I can't link you straight to it.

  • I'm sorry you're going through this. Just wanted to wish you good luck- I hope LO eats well for you and soon!
  • My second daughter did this at around 4 months. It is really frustrating and scary. The first dot or we went and saw at urgent care saw nothing. The next day we went to her pediatrician and they found a raging double ear infection. She was miserable.
Thought and prayers to you. I hope it gets better

  • DS was not taking bottles anymore after EBF for a while. I decided to try and change the nipple from newborn to slow flow and he was able to take it. I use the Avent natural bottles.

Hope you figure out what's going on soon.

  • We are going in tomorrow for Evan to be checked out again. I'm also going to reach out to the LC just in case for assistance, just in case it isn't a milk allergy or reflux.
I know she checked the ears, but didn't see anything. I will make sure they check. So far, he is still making wet diapers and tears... I think we r getting just enough into him.
