HG is ruining my life... vent

So I was diagnosed with HG yesterday... after spending the day in the hospital on IV. I am currently 8lbs less then I was when I get pregnant, however a couple weeks ago I was only 4lbs... so I continue to lose. At one point I was 13lbs less. It seems like it comes in waves. Last week I was feeling great... then Saturday afternoon I started throwing up again. Took zofran, however still throwing up. All day Sunday... then took off work on Monday all day Monday and called the doctor to tell them I was extremely weak and faint. They said if I continue even with Zofran to come into the ER tomorrow morning. So Tuesday morning comes around and I am still barfing my brains out... ER we go... DH had to work (He stared his new job), so my mother took me in. I was so weak and faint. They gave me an IV and a higher does of Zofran and was able to keep water, ginger ale and some juice down. Slowly feeling better, and I am back to work now, however still feeling pretty weak. The doctor who I never met before in our practice was super amazing and sweet. She said 'Hopefully this will pass by 20 weeks', but continue your Zofran for 24 hours 7 days until your next appointment. So I am running out of sick time because of being off either for migraines or HG... I feel like I am so unreliable here at work... I hate that feeling. I just praying for strength... What are other full time people who have HG doing? I was trying to bank that leave for when baby gets here...

  • I luckily do not have HG, but I wanted to say that I hope it ends soon and that you start feeling better.  It sounds miserable.  :(

  • So sorry. HG is very debilitating and frustrating. I've been off work for over 8 weeks now. I've lost 15 lbs this time, 23 last time around with home health care on IV. One of the only things that helps me is to drink a little bit of an organic protein drink every hour around the clock. I did throw it up at the beginning but I just kept doing it and finally got ahead of it. I'm 15 weeks now and this is my first full week of being able to eat and be out of bed. If you have a health food store around get you a protein drink and try it. I did the premade ones, just make sure there is more protein than sugar. Hang in there!
  • No advice, but I hope you start to feel better soon!

    *hugs*

  • I am so sorry you're dealing with all of that! My sister had HG and was hospitalized three times before eventually getting a 24/7 IV line and home health care.

She was able to use FMLA (family medical leave act) and then disability. Are either of those things an option for you?

FMLA is available, but was planning on using it after baby is born. I am hoping that it stays at bay for a bit... I am able to work from home, but it is a bitter process.

  • So sorry you're feeling so bad. Sending positive energy for healing your way.
  • Ugh! I'm so sorry you're going through that! I wish I had some words of wisdom for ya. The only thing I can think of, is talk to your HR to see what you're options are. I hope this rough patch passes for you!

I was just going to ask if you could work from home, but it looks like you thought of that.  If it continues it may help you save your time up though.  Maybe not the best alternative but it is something.  Here's hoping you feel better soon!

Just a heads up I was able to use separate FMLA time for my HG and then when I had baby. So I took a total of 12 weeks intermittently for my HG and then took the usual 12 weeks for after delivery the same year.

  • I only get 12 weeks unpaid with FMLA... which is all I am entitled too as long as I worked after one year of service and after working 1250 hours. Once that 12 weeks are up I have to work one calendar year and 1250 hours in the calendar year to get 12 more weeks... To work from home i would need to fight with HR about... My boss is very accommodating so far, but I really don't want to ask for more. If I have too I will.

  • Just a little note to say I hope things get better, and stay better soon. I don't have HG, but am still having good and bad MS days where I'll throw up a few times in a day and just generally be insanely exhausted. I'm full time and coping by working from home and taking days off as needed during this period. It's not ideal though (by far). Hang in there! You can get through this, mama! You're doing the right thing, and taking time as necessary.

  • My bestie had HG.  Sorry to hear you are going through that.  Mighty tough.  When I was super vommity I found I could get down ensure (strawberry) by sipping a little at a time (at room temp).  Best of luck and I'll send my positive thoughts your way.

  • Please explain to me how this works? Because I'm running out of time with HG too and my company rolls it all into one (pregnancy & birth both get the same 12 weeks)
My job (local govt) tried to do that to me as well. I did not know this was the case until my STD company, who paid me 60% of my salary while hospitalized, told me about it.

My HR had basically written me up and tried to take away all of my benefits.

Once I told them that I qualified under the CFRA/FMLA under:

The employee is unable to work because of a serious health
    condition.

A serious health condition means an illness, injury, impairment, or
physical or mental condition. A serious health condition involves:
    • Any period of incapacity or treatment in connection with, or
consequent to, inpatient care (i.e., an overnight stay) in a hospital,
hospice, or residential medical care facility.
    • Any period of incapacity requiring absence from work, school, or
other regular daily activities, of more than three consecutive
calendar days, that involves continuing treatment by (or under the
supervision of) a health care provider.
    • Continuing treatment by or under the supervision of a health care
provider for a chronic or long-term health condition that is incurable
or so serious that, if not treated, would likely result in a period of
incapacity of more than three calendar days, or for prenatal care
    (other than routine medical appointments).

Now that I re-read things, it may have helped that the FMLA I used overlapped into the next year when I had the baby.

  • Sorry girl. I have HG too and it sucks. My second pregnancy with it and it is miserable. I hope you start feeling better soon! I was in the hospital last week and then suddenly this week started feeling quite a bit better. I'm hoping not to have any more relapses and this is my way out. I hope your day is coming very very soon.
  • Ugh I'm so sorry you're going through this.  I can only imagine how awful you must feel.  I hope it passes quickly for you and you start feeling better!!!
