Need to convince DH - ammo wanted

So, our LO is getting big enough to probably be able to sit in a shopping card and I'd like to get a shopping cart cover. Not just for the sake of germs on the cart from others, but if she's got a cold, I'd like to provide "protection" to others too.

Looking for more reasons to get one for when the debate comes up at home. Dh doesn't think it's necessary so I' need ammo to back up my reasons.

Ready, Set, Go!

Re: Need to convince DH - ammo wanted

  • Cost of a single doctor's office sick visit + medicine is greater than the cost of the cover, much more if sick more than once.

  • My MIL told me about some study she read that showed like 98% of shopping carts have fecal matter in that top section. I didn't read the study, so I don't know if it's true, but I put all my produce in bags now. Just the thought grossed me out enough.

Yea, what she said.  If you do the shopping, it's kind of your call.  I can't imagine my hubby even batting an eye.
  • He does bat an eye. He says I make decisions without him and that his input doesn't matter. So when I have the discussion, I want him to see the reasons behind it and "win" on that merit rather than him resigning.

  • My DH also said he didn't think it was worth it for "once a week grocery shopping." But I thought that was really lame, so I found one on sale during my "once a week grocery shopping" and bought it. It is Carter's and was only $17.
Along with shopping carts, remind your DH that the cover can also be used on high chairs at restaurants. Those are always gross.

  • The one i have has toys and stuff on it to help keep baby entertained. You don't want to be that parent in the grocery store who's kid is having a meltdown the whole entire store and everyone in the parking lot can hear, right? Right?! : )
  • People pick up leaky chicken packages and then touch the handle.  Baby literally puts their mouth all over that handle and risks getting legitimately sick.

  • All great ideas! Forgot that it can be used for high chairs. I remembe when I waited tables, we only wiped them down with the same rag we washed tables with. If you think about it, we eat off of plates and yes baby hands on high chair go into baby mouth.

    Thanks all!

  • Does he own all the money?? I don't understand. Buy one, put it on. End of story. It's your child, you can do whatever you want.
  • My DH usually will think any idea I have is dumb until I show him differently. I want a cover too and he said it was ridiculous. Then we got the "sticky" cart. He was really grossed out. Then at a restaurant he noticed a baby making a giant mess all over a high chair and he now is a neurotic disinfecter and he's on etsy picking out fabric for one. If you can make him think it's his idea, you'll get it.
  • No my husband doesn't own all the money. We discuss purchases in our house.

And it's our child, not mine or his.

I understand what your saying. It's the same in my house. With the exception of necessities like diapers, wipes, etc...we discuss purchases too. I hope to get one of those soon but my lo isn't quite ready yet. I still keep her in her infant seat when we shop.

    New Mommy!!!

  • I understand discussing purchases, especially larger ones, but this is pretty minor. I wouldnt want to have ask my husband before making such a simple buy. Do you have to ask him to buy clothes or other basics, too? I'm not picking, I'm just curious. I am naturally frugal, which DH appreciates, and he trusts that when I spend money it's not wasteful.

And to answer your original question, it comes down to basic cleanliness. Ask him how many times he has sneezed or wiped his nose and then held the shopping cart handle. Then think about how many people that store sees every day, for years, and carts that are never cleaned. Eww.

  • I've worked retail specifically running the front and being "in charge" of the person who SHOULD clean the carts. They aren't clean... they never see a single speck of anti-bacterial unless you wipe them down. The cleanest they get is after a good rain. So raw meat, cleaning products (from the store not from cleaning), anything that someone can pull off a shelve has touched that handle and more then likely still on it.

  • I just went to a fall baby resale and bought one for $2.50! Maybe if you find some local resale groups in your area you can find one cheap

  • My hands always feel disgusting after grocery shopping.  As soon as I get into the car, before I touch anything, I give my husband and myself a nice dollop of antibacterial hand-wash - the thought of all those ickies in my daughter's mouth is terrible!

  • Well I can't say I think they're necessary.  As far as germs go, if you're really that worried about it you can always wipe down the cart real quick before you shop (a lot of stores have wipes by the carts for that).  That said, I still got one because I just felt like those seats were so hard and uncomfortable for a baby.  Try that argument with your H--and if he thinks that's not important then swap out his favorite chair for a folding chair until he gets the point.

Eh, mine would.  Different people's personalities and money situations are different.  DH and I are on a pretty tight budget, so even if it's 20 bucks either of us would be irked at the other if we bought something totally unnecessary.  I get you, OP.

  • I bring up the use in the shopping cart and highchair use. My dh was sold on that but I dont always use mine now that ds is 2.5 yrs old but I found it at a just between friends sale for $5 and brand new. DD isn't big enough yet but once she is, ill use it again.

  • I also carry Clorox wipes with me in my bag and clean the cart with those too. Dh thinks I'm crazy but he appreciates me doing it.

Germs aren't a good enough reason? i would just buy it, unless he has a better idea to keep LO from chewing on the cart handle.
