January 2014 Moms

Anybody else worried about..

I know this is vain.... but is anybody else worried about not getting to do their hair after LO's arrive?

I always told people I would still 'get myself ready' if I needed to when I had kids.. mostly because my natural hair looks like this:

image

I know I won't have time now. I showered before bed last night and threw my hair in a ponytail with a headband and any headband I've ever worn gives me the worst headaches!!

Ugh.. I know this is a lame worry... but it's an honest one!!

Re: Anybody else worried about..

  • My son is 15 months and I can literally count the number of times I've done my hair on one hand.  It is always up in a ponytail.

  • I think this is why so many women opt for the "mom chop".

  • It's not a lame worry.  I can't function unless I get a shower.  It's just my thing.  So totally understand!  :)  I really think it depends on your babies and your hubby!  There may be days where you can and those where you cannot.

  • You'll have time in the beginning- newborns sleep a lot! Even with twins I bet you could get them to sleep at the same time at least once a day. I have a friend who's due this month with twins and she had gotten the advice from a patient of ours who had 2 sets of twins (9 months and 4 years!) that when one is awake, wake up the other one so you get their naps synchronized...and when they're napping you can definitely get time to shower. I'm finding it gets more fun once they reach like a year and they don't want to take naps anymore:) But in the beginning you should be OK....It's not a vain concern- I feel like crap if I don't get to shower or at least clean up a bit. You still have to take care of you!

  • Oh yeah! I think (and panic) about that quite a bit! My hair takes a lot of time to wash and style, so I just figure it will be in a high bun for a while after the baby comes. But I hope, eventually, that I will be able to get into a routine with LO and be able to do what I need to do for myself in addition to caring for her!

  • Doing my hair typically consists of a blow dry & a brush.  So I've been able to keep up with that just fine.

I'm more concerned about the morning schedule for the first year with 2 kids. I already getup at 5am to get DS & myself off to Day care by 6:30 & work by 7:30. I am a person who HAS to shower in the mornings. DS was a long nurser who took an hour to nurse typically.  I'm worried I'll have to start getting up at 4am each day!  6 hours of sleep each night (if I slept all night) is not much.

We shall see how it goes though!  Might just have to move DS1's bed time up a bit so I can get to bed a little earlier.

  • It's not a lame worry. You will find time for things that are important to you and other things will fall by the wayside. So if that means you are getting up earlier than the kids so you can shower and do your hair before they wake, then that's an option for you.

  • I was given advice to have someone French braid my hair at the beginning of labor (lots of styles to choose from!) and it is out of the way for labor - looks cute for pictures etc.
  • For me this goes into my personal time. There are specific things I told DH that were important to me when we had DD. I said I didn't want to lose myself just because I had a kid; I always made it a priority to get up, shower, and get ready when with DD.  When DH got home from work he took over so I could get a work out in. Some days the workout was only 30 minutes others it was an hour, but I think it is imperative for moms to get their "me" time and that you should spend it however you want to.  Everyone's "me" time is different. For some mom's it is reading a book, cooking, sleeping, watching TV. For you it might be doing your hair.

There will be days where you'll just be a hot mess; that is how the cookie crumbles, but if you make your "me" time a priority you should find sometime to accomplish the things that will make you happy.

  • I'm with you!

I have naturally curly hair and I usually either have to blow dry/flat iron it or use mousse to get the curls to behave!

I'm scared I'm going to be stuck looking a HOT MESS! LOL

  • Not a lame worry at all. I have naturally curly hair that is really hard to tame, so I always have to do something with it. I don't want to relax it and permanently damage it, though, so I'm growing it out long enough so I can just throw it in a bun if I need to.

  • I'm the pony/bun/clip the wet hair back and go type of person only because it takes over a half hour to blow out my hair.  But I agree that unless I shower and get a little makeup on I don't feel like myself.  I think I've mastered the get it done fast but I know once the baby comes I might NEED to take long showers again a la no cares in the world!

  • Are there some permanent options which are available? I have ZERO personal experience or knowledge about those so I have no idea whether they are effective and safe but I keep seeing commercials for things like Japanese hair straightening or Keratin treatments. Again, no idea if they are good - just throwing out an idea.

My hair is thick and wavy. I used to blow-dry them but have become a master at the wash and go. Thanks to Morrocan Oil which works miracles on my hair. Although I do rock a ponytail or a messy bun a fair amount of time.

  • Honestly, I think it's easier when they are smaller and immobile. I get ready now but DD is probably pulling everything out of the cabinet in the process.

It might take you a little to find your groove but it's definitely possible.

  • I swore I was never going to get the mom do' and was always going to be cute. Because really, how hard can it be?

Skip ahead 2 years, staying at home, I cut off 6 inches recently (still longer than my shoulders), but it's rarely done and I plan our outtings around where I can be seen with whatever condition my hair is in.

DH works second shift right now and I can't remember the last time he saw me in something other than pajamas, or something slightly decent but comfy, and my hair a kinky, wild.  He swears that he loves this look more than me getting gussied up but I know better.  He's just been trained very well to say otherwise.  lol.

  • I had some of these fears, but honestly, when DS was still little enough to chill in the bouncy seat - before he started becoming mobile - I would pull the bouncy seat into the bathroom and I would sing to him and give him toys to play with while I did my hair and make-up. I looked great until he started rolling out of the seat and trying to get into everything.

These days, with him on the move, every morning feels like a Hail Mary morning. I'm phoning it in on a regular basis.

  • I've done the mom chop, the longer hair, something in between...Just find what's fastest/easiest for you. I can't stand having the same hair style all the time, which is why I've done so many now. I got my hair permed the 1st time ever last year, and LOVED it (but not the price). Redken has a really good curly hair product line called Curvaceous. I did even less with my hair then than I do now.

When I most recently got my hair cut, they straightened it (I got a perm again in Feb, somehow still have curl!) and it looked awesome! But, once at home, an hour wasn't enough time to get my hair to look like that. It's still fine with the wave, but still.

  • I worried too, but I make an effort every morning when I get up to do my hair.  It usually ends up in a ponytail by the end of the day, especially because most of the time I'm home, but I find when I make an effort to do my hair and get dressed (not dressed up, haha) that my day just goes better...
The first month or so after DD was born I didn't worry about it - I was more worried about my next shower ;) but after that I started.

  • Looks like I'm the bum on the block!  I anticipate a shower in the morning, but I will not be taking the time to blow dry/style.  It's not a priority of mine.  Unless I know I'll be doing something later in the day, I don't really care.  High buns, low pony's, french braid...just get it out of my face!!  Make up is a different story.  I will still probably put on eyeliner and mascara even though I'll be at home.  It makes me feel prettier.  Lord knows that with my PP body, I'll need every self esteem boost I can get!

  • I have curly, unruly hair. Right now I shower at night and either style it curly and sleep on it or I iron it at night and touch up for a few min in the morning. I definitely would like to keep doing SOMETHING to my hair after Lo gets here but I think makeup is my bigger priority. I think when I do my hair but not my makeup I look like a drug addict. Even if my hair is a hot mess, if I put makeup on I just feel little less psycho-looking. But the best laid plans...

  • My hair is a wavy, frizzy mess if I don't blow it dry.

I had a newborn who did not sleep a lot, but she was appeased by the bouncer, so I stuck that in the bathroom and took a shower with her in there with me. Honestly, that's kind of how I showered for the first year -- I always had some apparatus to contain the baby in the bathroom so I could get ready. That's not to say I showered and did my hair every day, but I did most days.

  • my SIL just had her baby in Aug at the same hospital I'm going to deliver in and no lie once I got done asking her how she was and how everything went, my first selfishly curious question was "how soon after were you allowed to take a shower?"

my hair is a hot mess and if I go to sleep with my hair wet I wake up looking like medusa, like my hair will attack you. very few products frizz-proof my hair and to top it off I have eczema (moroccan oil shampoos make me break out on my scalp and hair line and if I go more than 36ish hours without a shower I feel itchy). I am determined to get my showers and blow drying in. at least there isn't much humidity in January!

  • I joined a gym with childcare. I get some personal time, workout time, and a shower all at once. The days I don't get to the gym means not doing my hair and definitely no makeup. And my newborn was the exception, but she never slept. Once we were able to sleep train, things got way better.

  • I'm struggling with that now. The time I spent getting ready is now shared with DD1 and soon DD2 will join us. I'm learning to find balance and still take pride in my appearance after 16 months of neglecting my optimal appearance... Consider a low-maintenance cut that gives you shape and a sense of style without much effort. I went from a shoulder-length bob to a short pixie, and I love it! Also, don't forget perfume, polish, and lip gloss should be your stalle items. Those are my instant pick-me-ups when I'm feeling like an ugly duck.
  • Typo: stalle = staple items
  • My toddler loves to watch me get ready, and newborns/infants don't mind. If you want to do your hair, you will. :)
