Miscarriage/Pregnancy Loss

1st loss - scheduling d&c - nervous wreck

Would've been 7 weeks on Saturday, but there is no baby. Hcg is still rising (albeit very little), and have been bleeding pretty steadily for 8 days. Doctor would like to schedule the d&c and I'm terrified. I'm ready for the physical part to be over, but from what I'm reading, it looks like I'll still have weeks of bleeding after?? Also anxious that it won't work and they'll have to do it again. Or leave scar tissue. Basically, every negative I can think of.

Not that this can ever be a positive experience, but I would love reassurance that in all likelihood all will be fine... :-/

  • I am so sorry for your loss and that you have to be here. It is very hard to stay clam before a D&C, I hope that yours is soon so you don't have to be worrying about that. Yes, you can bleed for 2 weeks after, but I only bled for 12 hrs after. Everyone is different as you can read from our experiences. Wishing you the best of luck!

  • I'm only 6 days post d&c but I had no bleeding at all the first two days and then 4 days of light bleeding. It stopped today and I hope that's it until I get my period. My doctor first gave me misoprostol 8 weeks ago and there was still some remaining tissue so I ended up also having to have the d&c. It's a horrible thing to go through but if all goes well you are on your way to recovery much sooner. I only took one day off of work but I really should have taken 2. I was just so exhausted the next day so if you have the time take it!

  • I'm sorry for your loss. I had a D&C a week and a half ago and I was nervous too. The surgery went well and I woke up in recovery without much pain. After a day or so the cramps were gone.

The bleeding was only heavy for a day or two and then I spotted occasionaly (not every day). It seems to start up again when I exercise, but it's not a big deal.

  • I'm so sorry for your loss. I had a D&C with my on August 15th. I was extremely terrified going into the surgery - I think it's very natural. There are a lot of emotions. I was pleasantly surprised with the recovery, and VERY happy I elected to have a D&C. Everyone recovers differently, but more often than not it seems to be a fairly easy recovery. ((HUGS))

  • I had no bleeding or cramping after for a week. About a  week post op I had very light spotting that required only a pantyliner for a few days. My Dr. reassured me he only had an issue with tissue left behind one time in 17 years. Sadly, it's the most common surgical procedure an OB/Gyn does.
  • First of all, I'm so so sorry for your loss, it's already so emotionally hard and I hope that you are taking care of yourself.

I just had a D&C on Saturday and it was a very quick and easy (I mean that physically) process, in my opinion. I had lost my baby at 6w and didn't discover it until 10w. I've been bleeding since then, but it's been tapering off and is like a light period at this point, so not that bad.

Make sure if you have questions, like how long will I bleed, to write than down and talk to your OB before the procedure. Best of luck, I hope it goes smoothly for you.

  • I'm so sorry for your loss and that you have to go through this. I had a D&C a week ago, and I was pleasantly surprised with the recovery. I opted for sedation rather than general anesthesia, and I woke up without any bit of nausea. There was also no pain other than some minor cramping. Like others here, I'm glad I went this route. I hope your procedure goes smoothly as well.

  • So sorry for your loss an that you are having to go through this. After my D&C I bled for 2-3 days and spotted off an on for about a week and a half after that. After my surgery I did have some pain for a day or 2 but they have lots of meds to help with that. I took it really easy for the first 2 weeks. On my 2nd week I could feel my hormones start to plummet and was very emotional and had the symptoms of a bad period. Last week I moved and bled a little bit after moving heavy boxes so even after a month I am still trying to take it semi easy but am back at the gym. Wishing you nothing but the best!
