Government Shutdown

Anyone else here worried? Luckily, if there is a shutdown, I still go to work tomorrow. But it will impact my agency overall which could cause a lot of problems down the line. I'm so annoyed :(

Re: Government Shutdown

  • Wow @piffle42, I'll definitely keep you guys in my thoughts. Hopefully they figure this out before midnight. They really should lock them in a room without food until they figure it out.

Can he collect unemployment while on furlough if it comes down to it? I'm not sure how it all works :(

  • I'm so disgusted with this administration. Republicans, democrats, all of them. This is going to seriously hurt our economy, right when we were starting to improve a little.

Us too. Thankfully my husband is funded through November so I hope they get their act together by then. Everyone else in his building has to come in tomorrow and leave by 12 he will be the only person working until they figure their shit out.

  • So sorry @mmnumber5 and @piffle42. A girl I went to HS made a snarky post on Facebook about her not being worried and basically said the shutdown is no big deal. I've never responded to anything she's posted until now. It wasnt pretty.

Congress has their heads so far up their ass it isn't funny. The only ones that should stop getting paid when shit like this happens is Congress. And they shouldn't get back pay.

This shut down is going to cost the government money. It's absolutely mind boggling.

Lock them up and let them have 2 breaks a day to pray like they do with the Cardinals to pick a new Pope. No coming out until they're done.

I agree 100%. What's really sad is that if we stopped paying them, we could probably afford to keep paying the ones who are really being affected right now. In any other position, if you don't do your job, you get fired. But in this situation, they don't do their job and almost a million other people get fucked while they go about life with their mansions and fancy cars like its no big deal.

For real. They need to get their shit together. How is this going to help anyone?

  • The only positive to come of this is that a lot of these guys have shown what assholes they are and hopefully they won't get voted for again.
This has happened before, I remember when it happened w Clinton. Hopefully it'll only last a day. I'm sorry for all of you. In the past we recovered pretty quickly. But it still sucks. The debt ceiling is really really scary. That's next.

Us too. DH works for DOD so he is deemed "essential" so he still has to go to work, just won't get paid until things get straightened out.

  • Yes, we all need to remember this when it is time to head into the voting booth. So unacceptable. Congress should be ashamed of themselves, especially for accepting a dime while their constituents suffer.

  • I have gotten like 10 emails from our partners that they're completely shut down and we can't do anything with them.

  • I got excited when my contact at DHS responded to my email. Then she told me they had 4 hours to get in and get out. :(

  • @mbm1983 That fine part of it I think is stupid. How does it help you afford healthcare if you have to pay a fine for not having it?

I think the fine is to encourage (well force) people to purchase health care. As of right now, hospitals have to treat you regardless of whether or not you have insurance and/or can afford the bill. Because so many hospital (ER in particular) bills are "forgiven" it causes medical costs to skyrocket. You're paying 600 for an aspirin because so many others aren't paying at all. If they didnt charge a fine to those who choose not to purchase healthcare, I think a ton of people would remain insuranceless (if that's a word) and send $3 in a month towards their hospital bills- or ignore them altogether. Just like so many people do now.

  • Unfortunately they could be the best plans in the world and some people just still wouldn't go sign up. I won't be surprised if a decent size percentage of people don't sign up and end up with the fine for at least the 1st year when this all goes through.

  • I haven't looked yet, but that's much better than what I expected. Paying the $2 a month with a high deductible is probably way cheaper than having no insurance at all!!

Someone please explain to me how people can be so against this? I'm totally missing it. The few people I've met who are against it either have no clue what they are talking about or just don't like Obama and want something to complain about.

because conservatives hate big gubbament and this is big gubbamint.
And the tea party is a bunch of idiots that are obsessed with some weird version of the constitution and want as little gov't as possible (and national debt) and will do anything to do it, including shut down the government instead of compromising. They're also more than a little racist and populist, which is scary. And mostly stupid. Like really really stupid (no offense MBM). And trust me, they will use this current technique to put the kaibosh on raising the debt ceiling.

no offense taken here. my dad is truly misinformed and being a complete idiot. He watches foxnews all day every day. and when we told him that is probably the worst "news" show you could watch, he said "what? it is a legitimate news source...the only news source."

1,000 eye rolls. and then some.
it's true. it's kind of amazing how stupid tea partiers are. they're like the star magazine of politics.

With respect, I take some offense to sweeping statements like "they all". As a conservative, I consider myself somewhat educated about the issues, yet I'm not against the ACA or "big gubbament". I agree there are plenty of folks who fit your description, but I'm feeling totally pigeon-holed here.

I don't understand why there is an idea that we should like someone who has very different political opinions, etc. Than us. If someone is really conservative, we'll never be friends, ya know? I'm a hard-core liberal, feminist Marxist scholar, socialist, getting arrested w occupy Wall Street, super pro choice anti military, and I do not give a flying eff about religion (I don't care what others believe so long as it's not imposed on me). Like what would we even talk about? I don't mean that towards you BCV but in general.

I'm everything "conservatives" hate! And my politics are my identity. They inform how I live, who I hang out with, what I do for work, etc.

    image
  • I should qualify, when I was saying big gubbamint etc. I was specifically making fun of the tea party, not republicans in general.

    image
  • Ladies, we are all good. I just read "conservatives are afraid of big gubbament" and I felt the need to pipe up. Would you want to address someone who said "democrats are X" and you (if you're a proud dem) didn't fit that shoe? I see where you're all coming from, and honestly, I get it. I'm not one to cause a stink.

Please don't take this the wrong way,
I'm really just curious because I am having trouble understanding the other side. Are you against obamacare and if so why? And if you already mentioned it and this thread and I missed it I'm sorry!!!

Either way, I still think you're a bad ass mama :)

  • @stephcarter, I've somewhat talked about this before, but my stance is pretty unbiased at this point. I'm trying to educate myself as much as possible on the ACA and so far I have no qualms. My point earlier was that not all conservatives are against "Obamacare".

    Wow. That's fucking rediculous.
