BF + Cold + Snot = Frustrated!

I'm breastfeeding my little one, but a really bad cold swept through the house and she is very snotty and congested. All day today we struggled to get her to eat so a couple of times I gave her some expressed breastmilk in a bottle. I have used the Nose Frieda (gross but effective) and the nasal aspirator, with saline drops to clean her out and cool mist humidifier. She is miserable and I am increasingly concerned she will develop a preference for the bottle over the breast during this illness. I know it seems easier for her with her congestion.

I ended up EPing for my other daughter and I don't want to do it again.

Kind of freaking out because up until now breastfeeding has been great but right now she is refusing. Can someone offer some comforting words of wisdom here? Advice? Prior experience?

Not giving her the bottle and keeping her by my breast all day has not worked and has resulted in a hoarse, cranky, under nourished baby. I already took her to the ped for this illness and he said it is a virus that must run its course. :(

  • I'm sorry you're going through this.  We're on the tail end of a cold, it's moved into her chest and she is coughing a ton, but her nose is clearing up.  It will last 7-10 days, and you're doing everything you can to help her.  I have no advice to help with the feedings, just wanted to say hang in there!

No experience but I think if she's already done so well with the breast just a few days with a bottle she should go right back to it without any problems. I just think a few days vs weeks will make a difference.
Sorry not much help. Hope your LO feels better soon.

    Edit. Misread something.

How old is your LO? Mine is almost 7 weeks and had been taking a bottle a few times a week to help him be prepared for when I go back to work. He hasn't had any trouble going back to the breast at all. My Dr said avoid the bottle for the first 3-4 weeks which is what I did and it seems to have worked. Hope your LO feels better soon!

She is 8 weeks. What your Dr said makes me feel a little better. I think I am just really paranoid about ending up EPing again. It sucked, and I likely can't do it long with a toddler to deal with as well.
We have another ped appointment Monday I may go see and LC just for guidance as well.

  • My LO takes one bottle every night, and still BF's just fine! You'll be ok :)
And he's suffering from his first cold right now too, it's heart breaking :( so congested I just want to take it from him so badly!
  • My lo is 4 weeks old and has been switching off between breast and bottle since birth (she had an extended hospital stay). Your lo should be ok. Hope she feels better soon!

  • DS switches back and forth from breast to bottle daily as he's in daycare now. We haven't had any issues. He is 8 weeks today and also has the same symptoms as your lo. Our poor babies. :(

  • I think it's more common in babies to be able to switch back and forth. You hear so much about nipple confusion, but from what I've read and heard from different doctors, it's pretty uncommon.

I'm sorry your sweet babe isn't feeling well!! It's no fun for anyone. I hope it goes away soon.

  • @Maritza707 - Oh no! I hope it passes quickly for you guys. I hate seeing babies so miserable. I feel so awful for my little girl! The saline and Nose Frieda help a lot. She hates it when we do it, but falls asleep right after.

Thanks to everyone else. I think I'm just super sensitive about her not going back and forth successfully because my oldest decided she wanted a bottle only. It scares me! But we introduced the bottle much sooner. Oh if I knew then what I know now!
