Government shutdown

Is anyone directly affected by the current govt shutdown as an employee, receiving direct services or other?
Too bad Congress still gets paid because it is considered an 'essential service.'

Re: Government shutdown

  • My BIL works at TSA.  He's still working but not getting paid.  He will get paid retroactively after this mess is "resolved".

Many people I know are directly affected. A lot of this area. DH is considered essential. So he's still working but may not get paid until things are settled.
Really disappointed in both side. They need to stop posturing and get it together.
    ETA for clarification.

  • ME!  UG!

I was just thinking about posting about this, but didn't want to start a political discussion.

I work for the fed government.  Like most federal employees, I am being sent home, unpaid.  We had to report to work, and work for 4 hours, before sending us home.  We'll stay home, unpaid, until congress passes a budget.

It's BS if you ask me.  I don't understand how it can get to this point!  If anyone I know did thier job like these politicians, they'd be fired!  I could rant on, but I won't!

I work in the Baltimore / DC area.  Its going to be interesting how this effects the local economy in an area with so many government employees.

Honestly, it will ne nice to spend the extra time with DD.  If we're off for 2-3 days unpaid, it's not going to kill me.  But I'll really worry (financially) if we're not back by next week.

Got pregnant on our own without Fertility Treatments - January 2016!  Thank you snow storm Jonas!
    EDD 10/15/16
At 20-week anatomy scan found IUGR (Intrauterine Growth Restriction), and very low Amniotic Fluid.  Now, I'm High Risk and have weekly ultrasounds to monitor fluid and growth.  If baby runs out of room or is too growth restricted, they will deliver ASAP.  My current goal is to make it to 28 weeks!

  • @Toni79 I believe in the past congress has signed something that all Fed employees get paid retro actively. Let's hope that happens this time too.
I agree with you that if this is just a few days it will be "ok".
I'm in the northern Va area. If this lasts too long it is really going to hit the DC metro area hard economically.

I was thinking about you guys. You will probably feel it the fastest because of the services not running or open.

  • DH was exempt and sent to work out of state for a month, we don't know if he'll get paid right away however.

Taxation without representation! Park buildings are closed too. It's just so annoying and everyone in DC automatically qualifies for Headstart and that's out as well. So parents have to scramble at the last minute for childcare.

That would be nice off they paid us retroactively. However I'm not going to hold my breath. Last time there was a shut down it was 1995. It was shut down for 3 weeks and employees eventually got paid. However today's economy is a lot different than it was in 1995. So I honestly don't see us getting paid. Although I hope I'm wrong.

Google is ironic today ... the daily Google image is for the 123rd anniversary of Yosemite national park. Too bad you can't visit it today! Lol!

  • I'm not an federal employee. Well. I'm Canadian, living in the US, so duh :p

The whole thing makes me heave a big sigh and want to mash my keyboard into my head.

  • Wait.... no trash collection? !

    DC trash is federal.
Although @Baker_Bride I heard Mayor Gray on the news say DC local has reserves to pay for all services for a couple weeks. So did your trash get collected after all?
It wasn't picked up for 3 weeks in '95. That must have been really gross.

Yeah, I was going off what has happened in the past with the shutdowns. I really really hope they pay you guys back.m
We are really lucky that DH is essential. It just happens that the agency he works for falls under the mandatory spending.
