Liquor Laws

The Trader Joe's thread is upsetting me, mainly because I see that MN has similar liquor laws to OK??!  My life got so much better when I moved to KS and could buy COLD beer in a liquor store.  That's right, in OK, you can only buy 3.2 beer at the grocery, and that's it.  No liquor, not even wine.  Good beer (and everything else) is at the liquor store, but it isn't cold.  You have to plan ahead so you can ice it.  Oh, and the liquor store closes at 9pm.  And it's closed completely on Sunday.  KS is a dream in comparison!  Someone please tell me MN isn't quite as bad as OK?

What are the laws where YOU live?

Re: Liquor Laws

  • I'm never moving. Ever. I don't even buy booze if its less than 8%. Yes, hi I'm nesenotes and I'm an alcoholic. J/k...sorta. no really I would be panicking. What if you have a rough day and you could really use a drink? I mean WTH? I thought prohibition was done away with?

  • I live in California. We like our wine too much to be dry ;) The only limitation is the age limit and even then they're pretty flexible in shadier stores.

  • I'm in Texas.  Ours vary a lot by county.  I live in a partially dry county.  You can buy wine and beer, but hard liquor is only sold in restaurants.  You can get cold beer at the convenient store or wherever. We have a wet county nearby, so it isn't a big deal.  No alcohol sales on Sunday anywhere except in restaurants.

Also in Texas, also in a partially dry county. Although cities could vote to be wet. So wine and beer at the grocery store (just in last few years) but not until after noon on Sundays.   Liquor only at liquor stores (close at 11pm and not open on Sundays) and restaurants.  We live right at the north end of the county, so we have several convenient liquor stores.  No true bars, but a couple of ice houses (beer and set-ups only).

I remember when I was younger you had to buy a "membership" in order to buy alcohol at a restaurant.

  • In the city of LA by Hollywood and downtown they will even deliver it to you. Like take out. At a few of the apartment complexes I worked at one of the perks was having a deli/liquor store in the building.

I can put emery in her stroller and take a 10 minute walk to 4 different places to get whatever kind of booze my heart desired if I really wanted to. All 7 days a week from 6am to 11pm. Crazy. I'm never taking it for granted again.

  • @nesenotes, we get the prohibition comment a LOT here in KS when we tell people how it is in OK! I'm glad to hear it's a little better than that in MN I guess, but still not thrilled to be going backwards. Boo!
    image

  • OH! Also @nesenotes, in OK you could not walk to the liquor store with Emery unless you planned to leave her outside. You have to be 21 to enter the liquor store!
    image

  • WY doesn't have any dry counties and the bars are open until 2 am. We also have people coming over from Utah to buy all the time.

  • @SallySunrise did you know they are about to start selling 6 point Budweiser at the liquor stores in OK? Oh happy day!

  • I did NOT know that @RTaylor12, but I'm sort of a beer snob, so Bud, even 6 point, doesn't thrill me in the slightest. :P

They don't stand in the doorway, but they will chase you down the aisle asking for ID if you don't look old enough!

Would they really give you shit for bringing in a baby who obviously shouldn't be left outside? I've never tried it with Taylor (don't go to the liquor store much in the first place) but that seems crazy to me.
  • @RTaylor12, that would depend entirely on the employee. It is the law, so if they're being strict, they'll turn you away if you have a baby with you. I remember many times being left in the car when I was young, so my dad could run in and get some bourbon or whatever. I wasn't a baby, obviously, but they wouldn't let him bring us in.

  • LOL @wmel13, yes. 3.2 is like water. 6.0 is what's at consider "regular" I guess. Really good craft beers are even higher.
    image

  • LOL @wmel I just googled a bunch of different beers because I was wondering what kind of craptastic beer is even 3%. It turns out a majority of beers are around 5%. The darker they are the higher the %.

White wine is usually 12% red whine is 13 or 14% depending on the blend. I actually have a cheap red blend that I just looked at and its 14.75% no wonder I was getting buzzed quickly!

LOL all domestic beers here (Budweiser, Coors, etc) are 3.2 across the board, until November when Budweiser is going to go to 6 point in the liquor stores. When we go to Texas we always bring back tons of beer since it's all 6 poiont. The last time H and I drove to Carlsbad, NM we planned to stop in Texas to bring a few cases back, well we are about to hit the Texoma border and we realize we need to stop. Walk in, the gas station doesn't have any booze. Hmm, that's wierd, Go to the next store. No booze. WTF? Go to the grocery store. NO BOOZE. Finally we asked someone where all the beer was and it's a freaking dry county! FML. So we had to backtrack an hour into the next county to bring back our precious.

ETA: @nesenotes and yes, 3.2 beer is craptastic indeed. It's super-carbonated and kinda watery. Texas Bud Light is a million times better than Oklahoma Bud Light.

  • Who knew it got even cheaper, amiright @wmel13?? LOL!

In Indiana you can buy alcohol from 7 am to 3 am. Alcohol is not sold on Sundays at any store, only at restaurants or bars (hate this). You can buy it anywhere (cold too), grocery stores included.

You cannot buy cold beer at the grocery - only the liquor store. I hate the Sunday sales law here. You can also buy from a microbrewery or winery on Sundays for carry out.

We can buy whatever at our local grocery stores, gas stations, etc. We also have liquor stores that carry more of a variety of stuff. In my county you can't buy alcohol before noon on Sundays.

    Same here...booze it up!

  • In Canada, the laws are based on province not county/towns/cities. In Ontario, we can only buy liquor or beer at the liquor store, and beer at the beer store. They are open 7 days a week usually M - Sa 9-10 and sun until 5. Legal age is 19. Bars and restaurants serve until 2 am, but you cannot buy from them to take home.

I'm right on the Ontario/Quebec border so the Quebec laws are a little different, legal age is 18, you can buy beer and liquor from any store or gas station. They also have liquor stores for the better liquor. As for their hours, I have no idea I think it's 11pm. Bars and restaurants serve until 3 am.

What is the reason behind selling warm beer? Less chance of people drinking it in the car on the way home or what?

I believe that is the hope, yes. Mostly it just pisses people off.
