Naptime/bedtime

Hello

Mom to a very busy 18mo son here & wanted some advice on two things but I'll make two diff threads :)

This question is about his sleeping schedule.

While I was working, we put him on a strict nap/bedtime schedule that worked great with our work schedules.

630am wake
12 nap (usually 2hr)
8pm bedtime

Well the last week or so my son has been more difficult to put to bed at night and sleeps in until at least 7:30, sometimes 8. This would be fine, because I'm not working right now & an extra hour of sleep is great, but I go back to work in a couple weeks so we need to be back at the 6-630 wake up.

Also, if he sleeps in until 8am, do I move his naptime back an hour until 1pm? But if I do that he doesn't wake up until at least 3:30 ( he's been taking 2 1/2-3hr naps lately too) which throws off his bed time. Last nite, he didn't go down until 8:45!

Is this my lil guys way of telling me I should maybe push his naptime/bedtime back a little?

Re: Naptime/bedtime

  • I find that I just put my son down when he is tired/cranky.  Normally he naps around noon, but today he was so tired at 10am... so that's when I put him down.  He slept till 1.  So, my recommendation is to just follow his clues.  If he is tired at the normal time... than no, you shouldn't push it back.

  • How long has he been on one nap? I'm wondering if he's having trouble at bedtime because he's overtired. Is it possible he needs a little catnap in the afternoon every other day? I say wondering, because I truly don't know. Just spit balling here. This whole interplay between 1 nap, 2 nap, bedtime, and wake up time has me completely boggled.

Also, is there anything wrong with just waking him up early now, and making adjustments to see what works? My DD has never been a late sleeper but if she started, I'd never be able to let sleep past 7 two days a week because that's when she's watched outside our house.
