Working Moms

WWYD

My company was acquired in a merger 2 months ago. I am not happy with the changes and people are starting to leave. We will be moving to a new location next summer, which will be a longer commute. DH and I have also been thinking about TTC. This would be our 3rd child, and I would like to SAH. Should I stick it out at my current job until I have a baby? Or should I start looking for a new job now with the possibility of only being there a short time? Fwiw I have not had any Trouble TTC in the past, so if we decide to go for a baby I think it would happen quickly.

Re: WWYD

  • I think there's a few other factors to consider.  If you know you want to SAH anyway, can you afford to just go ahead and do it rather than find something short term until #3 comes along?  Otherwise, I'd probably just stick it out until #3 happened, but I don't know how bad the merger has been.

  • SAH is going to mean living on a much tighter budget, it makes sense for me to continue working as long as possible. I feel like I can deal with staying here for now, but depending on the location we move to next summer, it may not be possible for me to stay. My commute could go from 20mins to an hour+. Since I do DC dropoff and pickup, there's just no way I can manage that long of a commute. So by the summer I either need a new job or SAH.

  • I would begin my search which may take several months to find a perfect fit.  If you become pg before finding a position you can re-evaluate your options. Who knows maybe you will find a new job that offers amazing perks and flexibility or p/t option which will satisfy your needs.

I would stick at your job and budget so you can SAH at the beginning if summer. Unless you really really hate it, then look elsewhere now.
    Me too.

  • I would stick it out at least until next summer and maybe even until you have the baby, whenever that may be. Maybe they will let you work from home, in hopes they can keep you?

  • Take the TTC out of the equation.  If you weren't TTC, would you look for a new job?  If yes, then I would look for a new job and if you become pg, then you can make up your mind then, based on your current financial situation, how well you like your new job, etc.

I personally agree with this.  I interned in a place that was in Chapter 11 bankruptcy, so 'restructuring' one summer in college, and people were jumping ship left and right.  And it's always the top talent that goes first because they have the most options, so the people left were the ones that weren't those you'd ideally pick to be on a project.... That was a deciding factor for me to not hire on there after college graduation.  I think about how depressing that place was for the 3 short months I was there, I agree you need to make a decision taking the TTC out of the equation.  9 months of working somewhere you no longer enjoy is a looonngg time, and you never know what new opportunities you'll find that might find!!

    Best of luck :D

  • It can take a long time to find a new job, and a long time to get pregnant. You never know when either would happen, so I wouldn't make decisions based on what *might* happen. You can start to look for a new job, and if you get pregnant in the meantime, you may decide to stay put until the baby is there. Or you may find a new job quickly, and not get pregnant for many months. You have to do what feels right for you, with your current circumstances.

  • Any possibility that the new company may do layoffs with their changes? (i.e. could you possibly be in a position to collect unemployment?)
