Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Still no smile

My son is 7 1/2 weeks and I have still yet to get a smile. He will occasionally smile and coo at the ceiling or windows but when I come over he stops. He is getting better at eye contact which makes me feel better but I am getting really worried about the lack of smiles. Did anyone have a baby who was late smiling? And please don't respond talking about how your 4 week old smiles all the time- not what I need to hear!
Thanks!

  • We didn't get a smile with our LO until 8-9 weeks, but even then it wasn't really that he was smiling at us, but just sort of responding to funny noises and tickles. He is still sort of all over the place with his eye focus. He does make eye contact but he gets distracted and would rather look at the ceiling fan lol. Our pedi said at his 4 week appointment that babies usually smile by 3 months. So you have a ways to go!
  • DD1 didn't socially smile until she was two months old.

  • Your baby is totally normal and is not "late" to smile. DD is just under 11 weeks and has only been smiling consistently for 2 weeks or so. He stops smiling and cooing when you coming over because then he's focusing on you instead of focusing on something else. DD also just started with more consistent eye contact recently.

  • My pedi told me social smiles come between 6-8 weeks so of course she made me all nervous when at almost 8 weeks he isn't smiling. It seems like different pedis all have different answers. I hear so many reports of autism it makes me nervous. Anxious FTM here if you can't tell!

  • DS #1 was a late smiler. I was worried, I think it was like 9-10 weeks. Now he is the smiliest, happiest 2 year old you could ever meet. And smart as a whip if I do say so myself. ;)

  • Every baby develops differently and at his/her own pace. You cannot compare your baby with other babies.

This exactly. You will worry yourself sick.
  • My oldest never smiled and always looked so serious. She is now three and a half and is your average healthy, happy kid who is always smiling! Don't stress it will happen!
