October 2012 Moms

I think my daughter just ate a snail

So it's the first warm day in months - seriously, it's been a long winter - so LO and I were playing outside. We'd been playing together and then she went off after a ball and sat with her back to me. She was playing in the dirt and I was enjoying that she was entertaining herself. Until I realized that I'd thrown a dead snail in that area. So I looked for it and found LO sitting on half of it. Her face and hands were filthy and I suspect there was some snail in the dirt she'd been eating. Ugh! I'm all for getting dirty - sensory play! - but not so much the eating of wildlife. Ugh! Ugh!

    South Africa.
I went back to inspect later and it seems like she didn't actually eat it - it's shriveled up, but seems whole. She must have just played with it... Still, ugh!

  • My 3 year old was playing with shells once while I was nursing DS2, and he brought them over to me and said "Shells, mommy!" I looked and said "Yes, great!", went back to my conversation with some friends, and then DH came over to inform me that DS1 had murdered a snail. One of the "shells" was a snail that he had found and mixed with other seashells he was playing with (we were at a wedding in Key West.) So apparently he had snail on his fingers, but didn't eat it, and DH went to clean him up. Yep, that happened...

Your story just reminded me of that whole charade!

Will start with: Are you from there?

Indeed! How did you not know this? I drop it into conversations quite often, so thought everyone knew!

    Fire away!
Yes, I was born here, and have lived here all my life, except for a year in China.

@LorMor have you ever been to America?
How do people view us from there?
Do you go to the other countries there to vacation? Like a road trip?

  • I went to the US on a family holiday when I was 12. We started in Florida (Disney World!) and then hired a motor home and drove around for 2 weeks. My brother bought a pair of Reeboks and slept with them every night in the motor home! I've travelled around South Africa a lot, many road trips. I've also been to most of the countries in Southern Africa (Mozambique, Botswana, Namibia, Zimbabwe). And I went on an epic road trip from Tanzania to South Africa with an ex boyfriend. Tanzania, Zambia, Botswana, home. In a week. But I haven't been further north than that.

  • As to how we see you - that's a big question! What comes to mind is excess. I read about parties and holidays and how everything is a gift giving event and the gifts are excessive and in my mind way over the top. I read about birthday parties where babies get different outfits to wear during the party and a cake just to destroy. And weddings! The number of parties to celebrate a wedding blows my mind!

  • I have heard so much about Americans being seen as excessive, which I don't think anyone can really deny. Are there any traditions there for birthdays? When people get married there do they have a reception or is it just a ceremony?
Okay after this I won't ask any more questions. I do appreciate you taking the time to answer my questions though.
  • No, we do have a ceremony and a reception, but I'm talking about bachelors etc. We'd have one bachelor's party for the groom and one equivalent for the bride - whether it's a bachelorette, hen, kitchen tea or whatever.

For birthdays, people will have a party (and I've noticed children's parties getting bigger and bigger these days!) but I think it's just a party, with cake and snacks. No theme, no special outfits or decorations. We're not having a birthday party for LO and nobody seems bothered, whereas it seems that some other October 12 moms who aren't having parties are getting raised eyebrows by friends/family.

Don't worry, I'm happy to answer questions!
