One more stupid thing people say...

When I tell people we know, we're having twins I'm guaranteed to get one of two responses.  "Where are you going to stick them?" or "So when are you moving?"  The second one drives me UP THE WALL! As if I can just up and buy a huge mini mansion where everyone gets their own room. And even if I could I wouldn't want to!  My responses have become, are you paying the mortgage and the house cleaner?

I haven't heard anybody else mention this annoying question from people before so I am curious to know if anyone else gets this response from people?

Re: One more stupid thing people say...

  • I've gotten asked if we will all fit in the house or if we are moving!

  • I've just been asked if we have enough room for them - I just respond yes.  It's not a question that irritates me like some of the others.

D & L are here at 34 weeks 4 days by vaginal and breech delivery on 11/19/2013
Two healthy boys weighing 4 lbs 15 ozs and 4 lbs 5 ozs.  Only 6 days in the NICU and getting bigger, stronger and cuter every day!
  • I have been asked if we're moving but it's not as annoying as other questions I get asked! It's weird though. I get asked that by people who know we live in a 3-bedroom house and know that we have no other children, so it's not as if we don't have room.

  • My cousin asked me quite the opposite. She asked if we were going to down grade to a smaller house so we could afford two more babies!!! Either way, it's a stupid question! Geez!!
  • Haven't gotten this question, but people seem to be very interested in if we are going to trade in our Corollas for an SUV.
We get this one too. Except our Odyssey seats 8 and I don't think there is anything bigger. Well, maybe a school bus?
  • We were hoping to move out of our 2 bedroom apartment into a house once we found out we were pregnant ... discovering it was twins kind of confirmed that decision! There was literally no way we would have fit. So, we didn't get that question much just because people knew we were moving anyway.

But like two PPs, we have gotten the car question a lot. Yes, we are trying to fit three car seats in the back of our current car ... we might have to invest in a new seat for DS#1 as his is HUGE, but better a new carseat than a whole new car!

  • I never got this question. But ironically we are moving! We had to buy a different house. I get the car question a lot. "Are you going to buy a minivan?" Then they laugh as though a minivan is the only type of vehicle on the planet that will hold twins. Oi.
  • Ugh...my mother is insistent that we will 'soon outgrow our house'. We live in a 4 bedroom house and have no other kids. I just shake my head and think where does she get this stuff from.

And as for the car questions my husband has a 4 door Jeep and constantly gets asked if he's going to trade it in for a mini van. Um...we can fit two car seats in the back perfectly fine thank you.

They are laughing at the idea of a minivan. But the joke is on them. When I show people the inside of my van and tell them the gas mileage I get on it they stop laughing at me.  I wouldn't trade my van for anything. Vans are not what they used to be that is for sure!

  • I get..."Boy you are going to be huge"...or "I'm sorry" since they know what I am in for.
I hope that stops soon cause it really doesn't make me feel like crap and I am just excited and anxious to meet our little ones.

  • Oh heck while we're on the subject, I might as well add that my husband is an Identical twin as well. So his family is all like "Hey, he's an expert. He knows all there is to know since he's already been through it!" <facepalm> Seriously people? Think about the stupid words that just came out of your mouth.
  • We got that question as well since we were living in a little 2-bedroom apartment when we conceived. We started trying to get into a house before they were born but things didn't work out. We tried again before their first birthday but there were some things on our credit that needed to be cleared up. We finally bought our first house at the end of May and we couldn't be happier. It's only a 3-bedroom house so we'll always have two kids sharing a room but at least the twins have their own room now. They spent the first two years of their lives sleeping in pack n plays in the living room. It wasn't ideal and certainly wasn't part of the plan (neither was conceiving twins) but it's how it worked out.

We did end up having to buy a new vehicle because it would have been quite difficult for us to fit two infant seats plus our older son's Nautilus in the back seat of my husband's Taurus. We love our van and we're so glad that we purchased it. So roomy and we were able to fit everything that we needed for a week long trip in it with room to spare.

My mom jokes that our next big purchase will be a minivan. It's not really the top of our priority list (because the twins are!), but she isn't wrong with the practicality. The lower tailgate, 3500 lb. towing capacity (in a new Chrysler) and great gas mileage doesn't make anyone seem that far off with it! She also pointed out that in a parking lot it's a lot easier to get kids in and out of car seats when there are sliding doors.

When my twins are born I will have 4 still in 5 point harness car seats and one in a booster using the seat belt. I couldn't imagine trying to crawl over and around seats in an SUV that didn't have a removable middle seat in the second row. Besides, most 3 row SUVs are not designed with the car seat passenger in mind.

My dh to this day says our minivan was his best purchase ever. I love it! I have four under 4, which means all those car seats too. My automatic sliding doors are gifts from god.
  • Never had that question but we were going from 0 to 2 and we had 2 empty rooms. I do hear, so when are you going to split them up... my response is never.
