LO has a very sensitive gag reflex. He does well with purées and puffs, but gags and throws up any other foods we try. He's had scrambled eggs, Cheerios, cheese, toast... He picks them up and puts them in his mouth, but the gagging starts the second they touch the middle of his tongue.
Anyone having this problem? Any suggestions?
The worst part it, he seems to think it's funny to throw up! Last night, he discovered that he can gag himself with his fingers and make himself throw up! We tell him no and take his fingers out of his mouth, but he keeps doing it! So now, he eats, pukes, then wants to bf all day and all night because he's still hungry.
I'm exhausted!
Re: Gagging
don't have that problem. And I thought babies were supposed to outgrow the gag reflex by this age? Maybe it takes some longer than others? but honestly I'd probably stick with purees as long as he's willing to be spoon fed just to save myself the hassle of cleaning up the throwup. yuck.
Can you start transitioning from thin purees, to thicker purees, to slightly lumpy purees and do it that way?
good luck!
It's definitely gagging and not just making noise.. although he has perfected his fake 'cough' to get attention. I thought the gag reflex would be gone by now too. He does well with chunky purées and I can even mix pieces of scrambled egg into a veggie purée and he eats it without trouble.
. A quick Dr. Google search took me to posts about sensory issues and early signs of autism... which is exactly why I asked here first. I talked to my mom yesterday and she said that I was the same way as a kid... So that makes me feel better. I assume the problem will fix itself.
