sooo... nursing bras/tanks? Necessary?

I am a FTM, I have smaller boobs.. lets just say 34A maybe if I'm lucky they're up to a 32-34B now. For you STM's, did you like nursing tanks/bras? I just bought one nursing tank from Target. Other than that I'm not sure really which direction to go, should I buy a few more or buy some nursing bras... ? What's your experience?

I'm big boobs Magee not pregnant so I never tried nursing tanks. I will say a nursing bra was a must. P.s. Hope you're back to loving your OT world

Yes. You will absolutely need nursing bras if you're planning on breast feeding IMO. I wear nothing but a nursing bra/tank 24 hours a day until I stop breast feeding. Trying to pop your boob out of a normal bra is extremely difficult and in my experience cannot be done discreetly. Not to mention your boobs typically get A LOT bigger once your milk comes in and you'll need all new bras anyway...go for nursing ones. ETA: my boobs are typically a solid 32B pre pregnancy, a good 34C during pregnancy and wind up a 32E while nursing....

I have a follow up question to this.... Should we buy a couple nursing bras before baby gets here? It's just that I know they'll grow more, and who knows how much, so how do you know what size to get? I'm lost.

Plan on heading out to buy nursing bras once you are home from the hospital and your milk comes in...about a week postpartum I went to Destination Maternity. They were very helpful with getting me fitted and selecting the right bras!

I lived in nursing tanks! They are nice when you're pumping. I wore them under my shirts with nursing bras, too. You don't really need to wear both, but it's nice when you're pumping and you have to lift up your shirt and not have your stomach exposed.

I got my first nursing bra from a good bra/lingerie shop. The ladies in there are usually skilled in measuring you for the proper size and can help you determine how big to go. Just don't take the tags off until after baby and once you get the size right buy a bunch of them. My bra lady was spot on with me...even though I jumped 3 cup sizes.

Nursing tanks are awesome and what I wore most of the time at home. I wouldn't go crazy buying bras until you have the baby and can be measured after your milk comes in. I am pretty small chested and still ended up being a 34 E, they went up 2 or 3 cups sizes when my milk came in.

You guys, I'm kind of effed. I live seriously 40 miles from anywhere that will carry these things and so planning to go out and buy them post-baby isn't an option, not really, anyway. Not when what @Soozerella has called meat curtains will still be raw and awful feeling and I'll be drunk from sleep deprivation. I'm also what @mavgirl_73 would call Big Boobs Magee (I'm just working everyone into this comment tonight) -- I'm a small girl with porn boobs. STMs...suggestions?

I bought a couple of nursing bras from target just because they are comfy... As for this whole boobs growing another 2-3 cup sizes... I'm sure hubs will be happy, but I already bought the biggest size target has, what do I do :-( I was a DD pre-pregnancy, then fitted for a DDD after like first tri... I don't even know what letter comes next, but I'm scared. Yikes!

@northport06-I bought two from Walmart the first time around. Bought two cups sizes larger. Back then we lived in literally the middle of nowhere, an hr to the closest grocery store. I figured 2 sizes would at least get me through the first week, you'll have to go to "town" for baby well checks if you get the wrong size and they are only like 12 bucks. Hideous but kept the beasts coraled!

I lived in my nursing tanks with my girls. I got them at Target and loved them. I had a couple nursing bras too. I didn't like the one I bought at Motherhood. I ordered a few bras just recently only because I have a big size that isn't usually in the stores. I would say get a couple tanks and maybe one bra and when you get a chance to get out of the house go get some more after the baby is born. This way you can not guess so much, you can get measured.

I'm basically flat chested, lets put it this way, I'm finally filling up my A-cups now that I'm 30+ weeks and put on weight! ha. This is my 3rd baby so I can tell you that even the smallest boobs do get bigger while breastfeeding. Right after a nursing session then get a little smaller but get fuller pretty quickly.

My advice would be 1 nursing tank, 1-2 nursing bras, and 1 nursing sleep bra (looks more like a sports bra). That's just to start out with, and the ones from Target are fine, I think the smallest you'll find is a 34B though. Between my breasts getting larger and the nursing pads you need to use for leakage I didn't really have any trouble filling up the 34B.

If nursing works out for you, definitely try Bravado nursing bras. They are 1000 x's more comfortable and well made than any other nursing bras out there, but a little pricey.

Um, yes, if you are planning to BF, then they are a must. You can't really pull down a regular bra or unhook it. I'm an A normally and went to a 32E when BF'ing (this is my 3rd). Bravado tanks are the best - the cheapies from Target did not have enough support for me.

Also, I would not buy nursing bras ahead of time - maybe 1, but that's it. It takes a few days for your milk to come in and you'll want to have a better idea of how big you'll be. Get fitted if at all possible.

My sister cut up and tied some camis onto her nursing bras. So she kinda made her own nursing tanks. I will most likely be doing the same. Also bought a sports bra and cut holes in the nipple area to make a hands free breast pump.

I'm smaller but I used my nursing bra as my hands free the actual hands free pump bra didn't work for me and was clumsy in my opinion. I bought most of mine from target and before birth bought the more stretchy bras and after bought more fitted. Seemed to work and gave me a little room to grow since I didn't know what would happen.

@northport6 buy a few nursing tanks now. Then once your milk comes in use a measuring tape to measure your band and cup size. That way you will have the measurements and can order online or go to Target to grab a cheap one to try at home.

OP, I would definitely pick up a few nursing tanks or at least tanks with very stretchy necklines for the first few weeks. As others have said, once your milk comes in, go get fitted for a nursing bra. I would only buy one or two at that point because it takes about 6-10 weeks for your supply to regulate and your breasts could change again at that point.

I loved my nursing tanks! you can usually get them a bit bigger than you need and still not be uncomfy! I would do what PP have said and buy a few but leave the tags on.
