Shutdown talk

I probably shouldn't be on here today since I am 'excepted' and at work. But my relatives on FB are KILLING me. I come from a very republican family. Many of them are informed, but there are a few that vote party lines because that is how they were raised. DH comes from a very Dem household and I am firmly in the middle, much to the dismay of both our families.

So my aunt just got on FB ranting a raving about tossing out the Health Care Act because she is going to go poor because of it and be overtaxed, blah, blah, blah. Yet she makes no comment about her Congressmen and whether they are doing their jobs.

I don't even know why I opened FB this morning. I should have known better. So, anyone else deemed 'excepted' or 'furloughed' because of Congress?

Re: Shutdown talk

  • One of the projects I work on is an NSF-funded grant project. The NSF is shut down. I'm not sure exactly how that will influence the work that I do (and I'm guessing that for right now, it won't... but I'm not sure. Long term it would definitely be a problem. We shall see.).

  • Yeah, I got on FB and immediately hopped back off. All it's going to do is make me angry.

  • My DH and I are both furloughed....again....with 3 young kids. We have a contingency account, but I am beyond furious. I can't even think about it. I need to step away from the Internet for awhile.

  • I'm sticking to S12 FB and avoiding my regular news feed.  I think I'm safe as I believe that our Federal grant was already paid for the year.  However, it could affect next year if it goes on too long.
  • @mrsbhk22 I am sorry. I hope it is a short one.

  • @flamingemu me too. Thanks! I work for DoD. The military is being paid (thankfully) but the deployed folks will quickly feel the pain and lack of supplies is it's not fixed soon. There are a lot of tasks that are not completed by active duty folks.

  • I feel terrible for all those who will be impacted. I honestly didn't think it would happen. Shutdowns have been threatened and rumored so many times. I hope they get their act together quickly.

  • I'm here at work today, and frankly I'm shocked considering I develop ecological restoration plans using federal grant money - not exactly essential, you know?? I guess they worked out a deal since 2 people in our 20 person section work on Asian Carp prevention that we all get to continue to work...of course, none of us will see an actual paycheck until it's over.

  • Thanks everyone for your support.

    @hyaline agree 100%!!

It's all of Congress' fault. The ACA wasn't signed yesterday. It wasn't signed by one party. It was validated by a bi-partisan Supreme Court.

Even more ironically, the ACA still went into effect today. It's lose lose all around.

Thanks for hijacking unrelated legislation Congress (something BOTH parties do).

  • Ugh, thanks for the warning.  Between Health Care talk and Breaking Bad crap, I will definitely stay away from FB today.

  • DH works for the DoD and narrowly escaped furlough.  There are plenty of people in his building who went to work Monday and didn't know if they would be coming in on Tuesday, though.  A lot of phone calls like "come to work unless someone tells you otherwise" or "don't come to work unless someone tells you otherwise"... I'm so thankful he's working, though, since it took him 13 months to get into this job, and I need his company to keep paying benefits at least until after baby #2 is born...

  • I'm a state worker but the program I oversee is federally funded. For the moment I can't process any more applications but have been told that those currently accepted in the program will continue to receive payments.

  • @stasi No offense to you or @watercolor5 but that stuff makes me crazy too. How can some things (like ecological restoration) be deemed essential, but supporting actively flying Air Force planes or pilot training isn't (if the pilots aren't current, they are grounded) aren't?

    Who makes these calls?

  • The ACA was going forward with or without Congress coming to a resolution yesterday. It was exempt, but *certain* politicians wanted to make a point and be difficult and throw a GD temper tantrum about it.
Which is exactly what I said to my aunt before my blood pressure started to rise and I logged out of FB.

There is not a lot of rhyme or reason. We've got some folks here with tight ties to DC. We've also got some congressmen and women who actively campaign for our office to be kept open...it doesn't make sense.

Hugs @mrsbhk22 I hope this furlough is short and those that aren't working get retroactive pay when it's all said and done (that happened last time, maybe they will do it again this time!!)

  • Thanks @stasi. Me too. The tax payer in me doesn't want to get paid for not working, but it's one hit after another to our family lately. Ugh!

No offense taken- I want the politicians to come up with a solution that is permanent and allow all government workers to know their jobs are reliable.  If a job is that unnecessary, then cut it, but if you are hiring people, allow them to work and plan for their futures. DH's job was recognized as essential because he supports troops on the ground, so I'm thankful for that.  But government shutdowns are a complete mess and as politicized as anything else, which is why you get the weird inconsistencies in who is "essential" and who isn't.

I really hope @mrsbhk22 and your DH and everyone else affected by the furlough is back to work ASAP and they find ways to make cuts that don't involve people not knowing if they have a place to work the next day.  As a veteran, I definitely believe the military should be paid (on time) for their work, and allowed to do their jobs, or released from their contracts.  They don't have the option to not work or to quit, so the government should have to honor their side of the contract too.  Bah.  Now I'm all worked up...
