Anyone heard of the unisom/B6 remedy for morning sickness? I was so incredibly sick, nearly bedridden, for half of my pregnancy with my daughter and I'm terrified of having that again. On Saturday I was at a baby shower for a friend of mine. She has two preteen age daughters and it took her this long to have the courage to have another child because her pregnancies were so terrible with morning sickness. I asked her how her pregnancy went (we live hours apart and don't talk as much as we used to) and she said it was really good. This surprised me and I asked about her morning sickness. She said she was very sick in the beginning and lost 20 pounds in just a few weeks but then her doctor told her to take half of a Unisom and a B6 vitamin at bedtime. She said her morning sickness was immediately gone and she only had some occasional queasiness after that. My mom and the other ladies in the conversation were all nodding their heads and saying things like "oh yeah, I've hear that is very effective." I was thinking "WHAT?! Why didn't anyone tell me this when I was horrendously sick for months and months on end?!" I didn't say that :-) and no one knows I'm pregnant yet so I didn't say anything about my wanting to try this.
I read some things online and felt confident enough to try it. Kind of like a preemptive strike against morning sickness. If it's like last time I wouldn't be getting sick for another week or two. Hopefully this works!!!

Here is something I read online that I found helpful: https://www.drwalt.com/blog/2009/12/09/my-recommendations-for-eliminating-nausea-and-vomiting-morning-sickness-in-pregnancy/
I have also just learned from my October 2011 moms Facebook group that this combination is very commonly prescribed in Canada and that it can be very effective. Apparently in Canada prescribing drugs like Zofran is more of a last resort as opposed to doctors in the US who prescribe that pretty much first thing. I hope this works since I can't take Zofran anyhow! The best I can do is muscle through the misery with Preggie Pops.
Last night I did take the Unisom (1/2 of a pill which is about 12.5 of doxylamine) and a B6 vitamin supplement. I feel sooooooo tired this morning! I think I'm going to wait until I actually start to feel sick before I start this again. If it's like my last pregnancy then the morning sickness will hit in about 2 weeks. Blaaaahhhhh!
Update: the morning sickness hit me on Wednesday. I was feeling super nauseated and generally miserable. I took half of a Unisom (Doxylamine) and a 100 mg B6. the next day I was totally out of it. Felt like a zombie until 6 PM! Thankfully my husband was home and he helped take care of our daughter so I could rest. I took 3 naps! So, lesson learned: half of a Unisom (12.5 mg) is too much for me! BUT I wasn't nauseated at all! I backed it down to just 1/4 of a Unisom (about 6.25 mg) with the B6. This has held off the morning sickness well but I don't feel drugged the next day. I still feel a little nauseated in the late afternoon/early evening, but it's mild and I get over it once I eat some protein.
I don't know if this would have been enough to help me with my first pregnancy when I was horrendously ill for most of my pregnancy, but it's helping now so I'm happy! This pregnancy does feel different too. Must be a boy!
