Medela pump moms

What accessories did you find it helpful to have in the early days of pumping? Extra parts? The hands-free bra? My pump arrived via insurance today and I'm thinking about additional needs for it.

  • Depending on how often you pump, you may want an extra set of parts. You will probably need more bottles than what come with the set. I never bought the hands free bra. I just used nursing tanks and they held it well. I exclusively pumped.

  • I thought the hands free bra was essential. I nursed my son for 14 months and worked full time starting when he was 10 weeks. I got so much use out of the bra, I did have 2 sets of parts as well.
  • A second set of parts, more bottles, and a water bottle. I did but the hands free bra for this time but didn't have it last time

  • Hands free bra was a nice perk for me. I could read, play a game on my phone etc while pumping. It made pumping feel like me time.
I bought more bottles and a second set of the other attachment pieces.... But I was not fabulous and remembering to wash them right away so the second set became a necessity.

  • Milk bags for the freezer, I used 6 bottles for bumping at work, hands free pumping bra or something similar, an extra set of pump parts is nice.

  • I did hands free, but save money and buy some cheap sports bras from Walmart (one size smaller than you would normally wear) then cut small holes over where the nipples go.

I was going to suggest this as well. But another great thing was the medela steam bags for cleaning pump parts - I haven't looked for them recently so I'm not sure they're still selling them but they were really useful with DS2.

  • The right size of breast shield! I needed the XXL, they ship everything with the M.

  • I had two of the hands free bras and extra bottles to pump into. I nursed for 13 months and was working and sometimes traveling for work after 3 months. Having the hands free option to continue working made it possible to keep up. I also agree about making sure you have the right sized shield. When I met with my lactation consultant she pointed out I needed a smaller size which made a huge difference.
  • I second the right size breast shield. I also switched to using pumping pals shields (https://www.pumpinpal.com/), they were much more comfortable. I highly recommend them.
