Help?!

We need ideas!  LO won't stop screaming/crying...it's been going on since about 1:30 this afternoon.  We've tried the 5 Ss, I've nursed her until I can't anymore (she's crying even as she eats, which she never does), we've changed her, checked temperature, given her a bath (which actually did calm her down for about 15 minutes). At this point, she's now crying about whatever is actually bothering her in the first place and because she's so overtired from all of this!

I am assuming her poor tummy is upset but she's not constipated or anything.  We've done bicycles with her legs and made sure she's burped really well after feedings.

Anything else we can try?  DH and I are gearing up for a long night and any pointers would be much appreciated!

Re: Help?!

  • Have you tried gripe water or gas drops? Poor baby. I hope she calms down soon.

  • Gas drops. A warm heating pad on your chest, then lay baby tummy down on the heating pad. Helps calm them and breaks up gas bubbles so they can get them out. Hope something works for you soon!

  • If she needs to get to sleep a drive in the car may do it. Poor thing.

  • Will she take a pacifier just to soothe?
  • I was thinking gripe water. I am sorry. My son has been very fussy today, but I have gotten a break. I hope she's better soon.

  • @coraggiosa and @sprocketsmom - we don't have any drops on hand.  Can someone tell me more about them (what are they made of)? I'm assuming you can just get them at any drugstore?

I will try the heating pad now...

She is screaming too hard to take a pacifier.  She will nurse for a few seconds but then cries again and can barely latch because she's so upset.

DH is tapping out - my turn!  Thanks for the ideas ladies!  Crossing my fingers this is not ongoing - poor thing!

  • Have you tried running the vacuum? Or driving her around in the car?

  • Oh honey I'm so sorry. Poor baby. I don't have much advice as I would have thought the 5s's would've worked earlier on. It's been a very long time though :( I think a ride in the car might help. But bring DH with you, have one of you in the back to console her. I know it sounds crazy but be as calm and stress free with her as possible. She picks up on your nerves.

Good job keeping your cool this long. Hopefully she'll tire out soon and sleep.

    Good luck.
  • It sounds like you've tried everything I would besides gas drops (I have one called Colic Calm). Sometimes DD also calms down in a vibrating bouncy chair. Also, check her fingers and toes to make sure no hair is wrapped around and hurting her. Our pedi said if she keeps crying and nothing works to call the nurse line. I hope she calms down soon, for all of you!!

  • Try bath and fresh or no clothes. Maybe something is itchy. Try baby massage. Try driving. Try walking around fast paced (like you are going about your business) while holding her close and in a similar position as she would have been in the womb. Swaddle.

With my oldest, sometimes everyone just needed a break. I would lay him down in a safe place in silence with only dim light, then I would go outside and listen to the breeze and the birds in the trees. A couple minutes later I came in much more relaxed, and he was more relaxed too. I would usually just hold him close and rock and everything was fine.

And lastly, if she sounds like she is in pain or if you feel she is hurt in some way, go to the doctor or er or urgent care.
  • My DD was labled colic (first born) and one of our only successful remedies was gripe water. We used this one https://reviews.walgreens.com/2001/prod6043143/tummy-soother-liquid-reviews/reviews.htm

It was a God sent. Really.

  • Mabey try going for a walk with her in the stroller. My LO chills out from all the bumps. Even if he doesn't go to sleep the changing scenery keeps his attention.

If you have anything to baby wear you can try putting her in that.

If it is gas or constipation, try laying her on her tummy and rubbing her back in a counter clockwise motion.

  • Try stripping her down to diaper and laying her in breast feeding position with your shirt off. Skin to skin. Softly sing even if her screaming drowns it out. The vibrations are felt. Also check her fingers and toes closely. Sometimes you get some hair or thread wrapped on one toe so tight and it bugs them. seriously though a large percent of ER visits turn into a search like this post. Usually ends up being a simple solution.
  • Smithlicone or Mylicon are gas drops we use. Sometimes they help sometimes they don't. My LO has really bad reflux and screams an hr after he eats. He likes to get rocked and me sing to him w my terrible voice. The colic calm by Gerber is a probiotic and will take a couple days to get the full effect. (We have that too)

It's so nerve shattering w a fussy baby especially when they seem in pain. Hopefully it's gotten better!!
  • Thank goodness! Sleep tight!
  • Definitely agreed with the gripe water or gas drops. DS gets really bad gas every night before bed. Bicycles don't help, heating pads don't help, burping doesn't help...the gas drops are the only thing that works for him when he gets gas that badly.

  • I'm so happy everything calmed down for you. I was thinking about you. I hope you all three got a good nights rest. You both are great parents! Hopefully it was a one time thing and her tummy feels better from now on.
