1st Trimester

Flying during first trimester??

I know everyone has a different opinion on this since first trimester is the most sensitive time for the baby.  Has anyone flown a long distance (5-6 hour flights) during their first trimester and miscarried?  I'm 8 weeks along and am supposed to fly next week for the holidays and am getting lots of different opinions and am worried what would happen if I flew.

Re: Flying during first trimester??

  • There is nothing wrong with flying (even long flights) during the 1st tri.  Best advice (and this goes for whether or not you are pregnant): stay hydrated and be sure to get up and walk around every couple of hours.

  • I flew twice last week, and the only problems I had was increased nausea.  Thankfully, all my flights were short (less than two hours for all six flights), but it definitely was not my best flying experience ever.
  • You can even fly at 36 weeks with a doctors note.  So yes, you'll be fine.
  • Flying is fine up until the end of your 3rd trimester.
  • I flew to Peru during my first tri. That also includes many domestic flights within Peru. My baby is fine. Like others have said, stay hydrated, walk around every so often, etc. The only difficult thing may be if you are having m/s. Enjoy your trip!
  • You'll be fine. I just got back from flying to Hawaii on a 5.5 hour flight and had some swelling issues but just drink lots of water and try to move around a bit on the plane. If you're still concerned ask your doctor.
  • I was told by my doctor not to do it.  After the first tri my OB will make me come in to check my cervix before I fly.  You should ask you doctor.
  • See my siggy.  My doctor said no problem.  Just get up and get your blood moving every hour or so.
  • i flew 3 different times during my pregnancy.  once in every trimester.  trust me, you'll be fine.

in my 3rd tri, my doctor told me to take copies of my medical records just in case and to get up and walk because it was a long flight (i had to anyway because of all the peeing).  you will be fine!

  • I am flyign to the Phillipines (20 hr flight) I will be 9 weeks. My Dr said it was fien but REc. an aisle seat so I can stretch my legs & go to the bathroom easily, also to stay well hydrated.

  • What in the world?!  There's nothing wrong with flying LOL The only reason the airlines (and Dr's) don't want you on a plane your last month of pregnancy is because you might go into labor....
