Everyone is talking appointments and ultrasounds, and I'm just curious if I'm the only one who sees a Doc that won't see me until 10 weeks and only does one ultrasound (the "gender" ultrasound around 20 weeks). I would love to have an ultrasound earlier like many of you, but it's just not standard here. Anyone else in this boat?
P.S. I'm only 5W2D so my EDD isn't until May 31st by my calculation.
Many of us who are getting early ultrasounds either have a history of loss or are in the care of an RE. I'm going in for a viability scan this week because I'm seeing an RE. After that, if all checks out, I won't get another one until the "standard" time either.
Although I got an early one, it is not standard and unless you have a history of something may be considered elective. My practice doesn't see patients until 8-10 weeks so that sounds normal to me.
My first appointment is tomorrow and I will be 10 weeks on Wednesday. From what I have read from others first appointment around this time is pretty normal. I am not sure about the US though. I had one at 6 weeks. I would ask your DRs office about maybe having an early US.
no sweat: my first appointment is also right at the 10 week mark (10/7). first appointments are usually scheduled for 8-12 weeks provided everything looks normal-ish, and you have no history of problems or are considered low-risk. :-)
it's hard to wait, but this is a good sign that you're healthy, and that there's no need to rush you in to investigate.
Lots of practices do things differently. My doc wanted to see me as soon as I called to say I was pregnant, so I saw him at 4 wks 2 days, then had a dating u/s and will see him tomorrow for my first regular appt. Next u/s will likely be the NT scan at, if memory serves me correctly, about 13 wks? Same procedures as when I had DS 3 years ago. I don't have a history of loss nor do I see a fertility specialist or high risk doctor. This is just the way my doctor does things, I've heard lots of different scenarios, I'm not sure why they differ so much.
As a FTM, I have no clue. what is normal/abnormal. I called my OBYN and receptionist told me what day/time and said there would be u/s (I'll be somewhere between 7-8 weeks).
M14 January Siggy Challenge: Resolution I have no intention of keeping...SHOPPING LESS!
In the UK we typically wait until 10 weeks to see a midwife for a general appointment and then until 12-14 weeks for our first scan. I had an early one this time (7wks 2d) because i've had a previous loss.

With my first pregnancy, I wasn't seen until 10 weeks, I didn't have an ultrasound, just a urine test, and then I had the anatomy scan at 20 weeks. That was it! That's the norm for a healthy pregnancy.
Oh the "gender" ultrasound... that's not in any way what an anatomy scan is about. At all. It's about checking the fetus for development. They often are able to show you the sex organs as well. It's a health thing.
This is bugging me. I am not an idiot, please don't talk to me like I am. And you had no intentions of answering the question I asked, so why would you say anything at all. You were just trying to be snooty. I find this very childish.

I find the whole wishing for more ultrasounds thing very off putting. It does bring out my snarky side.
Considering you are commenting on my verbiage and not my desire to have an ultrasound (which is not even the case, it was simple curiosity for finding out what is normal), I find your snarky side off putting.
Hi, that's basically a normal schedule unless you're over 35 or have had a loss or previous issues. It is exciting to get a sneak peek of what's going on, but also rest assured that not having any additional ultrasounds is a good sign too Best wishes to you!
Thank you for all the helpful comments! I have a 2 1/2 yo and I didn't think anything of it when I was pregnant with him. Recently it just seems that there are so many early ultrasounds, now I know why people are getting them
My first will be @ ~8 weeks per my facility. Then insurance covers 1 per trimester. Apparently it's normal! PS: Dont worry. I'm a FTM & so hoped and thought that U/Ss were more frequent! I don't blame a new mommy for being excited & anxious to see her peanut's progression every chance she gets!! I'd prefer 1 EVERY DAY lol! I'm just THAT ecstatic about my miracle!!
My first one would have been at 12 weeks at my appointment with my OB. I have an appt at about 8 weeks (tomorrow!) with the NP, where they do some basic workup stuff and some educational stuff, but they put me in for an early ultrasound also because I had some spotting earlier on and low progesterone.
I was sort of surprised by all the early u/s posts too. I haven't even scheduled an appointment yet, and I'll be 7 weeks tomorrow. my pregnancies have all been 'normal' as far as check ups go I guess. it makes sense after losses and stuff. I have no idea when I'll have my first u/s!
Only reason I have had three ultrasounds before 8 weeks was because I was an infertility patient with an RE. The RE wanted me to have my first OB appointment scheduled within the following 2 weeks after being released which is next week at 9weeks. I'm so used to being at the doctors office weekly or sometimes more often....its going to be strange only going once a month. Strange in a good way of course

I had an early u/s because my OB was concerned, but I also would have had one for dating because of irregular cycles. Otherwise my OB likes to see you at 7 weeks, but it's just an internal exam and going over history. Nothing exciting or reassuring. By 10 weeks, you have a chance of hearing the heartbeat on the Doppler, so that is something to look forward to!

I worried about this too. My doc won't see me for a LOOOONG time. I have an appointment with the nurse to confirm pregnancy and do blood work when I'm nearly ten weeks. Then get to see a nurse practitioner for something (they didn't elaborate) a few days later. It really scared me too, but apparently thats just how they do things here.
The only reason I got two early ultrasounds is because I was having ovary pains and they wanted to check for tubal pregnancy. Luckily is wasnt. Then my second was Bc my beta levels were barely lower than normal. I wasn't supposed to get my first ultrasound until 8w and then my first doctors visit around 10w. Generally early ultrasounds are if they suspect a problem or you have a history of miscarriages etc. It's a long wait I know but it'll be worth it!!
My old OB doesn't see you until at least 8 weeks & does a dating u/s at that visit as well. Then another at 20 weeks for the anatomy scan. Nothing else unless there's problems. This time I'm seeing a midwife. I go in around 8 weeks to see the NP of the overseeing OB. From what I've heard from other mommas she may or may not oblige me with an u/s if I ask for it (I will for my own sanity). Then nothing until the anatomy scan again. Last time I had weekly u/s from 30 weeks on due to GD & it got old real quick.

Some practices have different schedules/rules and insurances cover different things.
Standard u/s appts at my OB are 8-10 weeks, 12 weeks and 20 weeks. I had a growth u/s at 36ish weeks for fear of small person/monster baby problems.
