Infant at home and new one on the way

Hi All,

I'm really worried about my son's world being turned upside down when his little brother arrives in November.  Big baby will be 12 months and two weeks old when little brother arrives.  I'm really worried about him feeling neglected when mommy is recovering from a c-section and giving time, energy, and boobies to this new, crying thing he doesn't understand.  Anyone got any advice or experience they can share to reassure me things will be ok?

  • First of all, I recommend you look at the 2u2 board. It could be very helpful!

    Mine are 16 months apart, so a bit different... but honestly, the younger they are, the easier it is! We are now expecting 3u3 and our 2nd will be 19 months old when #3 is born. It is obvious that she understands much more than her brother did when she was born. He barely reacted (except for with confusion and surprise) when she was born. Now, days away from my due date, it is obvious that our little girl is very jealous, attached, protective of me (and the big tummy) and I fear her reaction when the baby actually comes!

  • Mine are 14 months apart and it has been going great. Ds1 ignored ds2 in the beginning. Now he has gotten used to him and loves giving kisses. I do have to watch him close since sometimes he tries to play a little rough with him

    I also had a csection and you are going to need help at home after. I did not get the ok to pick up ds1 till 2 weeks pp. At that time they said only when absolutely necessary, like getting him out of the crib. Good luck :)

  • Thanks Tara*N*Chris  I'm starting to feel a bit better about how Big Baby will react to New Baby.  Yes...I'm doing my best to prep my husband and my friends and family that I will need their help to wrangle Big Baby for the first 6 weeks.  My DS1 is of significant size.  (90th percentile of size) so I know it's going to be a challenge. 8-}

    We had pretty much identical spacing--my kids are 12 months 3 weeks apart. :) the reality was much easier than what I anticipated, thankfully. My oldest was blissfully unaware as to what happened--I think he was truly too young to really get it and that helped a lot. My dd came shortly after Christmas so he was far too occupied with new toys to care someone was hogging all the attention. Dd was a really laid back easygoing baby so that helped too. Advice would be to get lots of distractions for your oldest in the early months. Baby wear so you can hold your infant while you play with your older child. Stay one step ahead of the game and prep what you can (like meals for your oldest for example) while dh is still home in the morning. Keep the rooms you frequent stocked with diapers and wipes for both--change on a towel vs lugging everyone to another room. Keep supplies like snacks, a sippy of water, books, toys, etc for your oldest by the chair you nurse in so you can meet his needs while you nurse. Good luck!
