FTM newb questions

I warned you that this is a newbie post, so be nice. TIA! :)

1. Does anyone else randomly get these weird, twingy feelings of numbness where their thighs meet their crotch area? (I know there's a word for this place, but my brain isn't working at the moment.) Like, I'll be totally fine strolling along, and then all of a sudden it feels like someone is pushing their thumbs into those creases and making them go numb. It's kind of uncomfortable and hard to walk normally when it happens! I'm assuming it's because baby is so low (-1), but I've obviously never had a baby before, so I'm not totally sure what's common and what's not.

2. You ever get the feeling like you have to pee like a racehorse, and then you sit down and just can't pee (or hardly go at all)? Yeah... that's been me for the past week. My urine looked good - just a slight trace of protein, which they weren't worried about - so I know it's not a UTI. But then what's going on?!

3. Annnnnd, in your personal experience, what do contractions feel like? I've heard everything from menstrual cramps to diarrhea cramps to "I had no idea I was having contractions! The baby just fell out, I swear!" So I'd like some input. :)

Re: FTM newb questions

  • 1- never happened to me. 2- happened to me a bunch. 3- for me (tmi warning) my contractions felt like I really had to poop or fart. The night before my water broke I had eaten a lot of beans and corn among other things for dinner. So there I am in triage telling hubby that my stomach was upset and I needed to poop. Turns out they were contractions and I was at 9cm as u went in for my c section.

That said I bet contractions feel different to everyone. akin to, how long it's a piece of string?

  • 1. I'm crazy achy in those spots, I really wish I could be numb there for a few!
    2. I pee non stop. Never a shortage.
    3. I was induced with pitocin and never had an epidural. I had back labor that felt like period cramps x100 + the worst gas pains I could imagine.

    Welcome! :)
  • FTM here but I'll give it a whirl!

    1. never had this happen before
    2. Yes you just need to change your position a little bit and keep trying
    3. I think I had some more real deal contractions Saturday night they felt like diarrhea cramps to me. I also get menstrual cramps feeling as well but it doesn't really come and go so thinking that isn't a contraction..

FYI - Asking people to be nice never goes over well here!

Apparently not! Judas mud. I was just giving a warning because I know how much some of these ladies hate FTM questions. I'm consistently reading how annoyed they are about hospital bag questions, etc. so I figured a little warning wouldn't hurt. But damn.

Just put on your flame suit JIC! It was good to warn about it being a newby post... It was just the asking to be nice part that might get some side eyes! You will survive :)

    I appreciate it. :)
  • 1 - I get that too
2 - Never had that happen
3 - As others have said, you'll never get a good answer about it. And you'll really want to give an explanation for other people down the road and feel sure that after you've gone through it you'll be able to, but you still won't. I've had contractions that have just felt like everything gets hard that don't hurt much. Lately I'm having ones that are very low and feel like period cramps and sometimes radiate to my thighs. I had some back labor last time and just felt a ton of pain in my back. So even for the same person there are different kinds of contractions. And I'm not 100% sure I've yet felt a contraction that actually achieves anything.

This sounds about right, from what I've heard from friends/family members. I guess it's totally a case-by-case thing, kind of like describing what baby kicks feel like. But I do like hearing what others compared them to. :-) Thank you!
  • 1- normal and that's called your groin
2- try leaning forward or squatting as you go
3- no one can tell you

  • 1-never had that sensation, but it seems normal to have numbness there considering there is a baby pressing on all kinds of nerves.
2-this happens to me a lot and is very common. That's just baby changing positions and putting different pressures on your bladder. Try leaning forward and side to side to get it all out lol, sounds crazy but it works. Also, try not to hold it because a full bladder can cause uterine irritability.
3-I have had BHC throughout this pregnancy and had recent experience with real contractions. Trust me when I say-you will KNOW the difference. They fucking hurt. That's the best way to describe it.

First, they are being nice despite a lot of this being information that has been talked about a lot on the board.  They are answering your questions. It's not that we hate ftm mom questions, it's that we hate when people bring up a topic that has been talked about several times in the last week, but instead of going back through the threads, a new post is made up about it.  Or instead of simply trying google, they come here first.

Third Tri board will also have a good chunk of this information as well...

I have looked up these questions on Google and - big surprise - there are fifty thousand possible explanations. So, in my mind, the best thing to do is ask for personal experiences from other pregnant women who may be experiencing the same thing right now (you know, since we're all pretty close in due dates). I even acknowledged that everyone feels differently with contractions, but asking for personal experiences doesn't hurt. If you're that annoyed with seeing a question you've seen before, don't respond. It's not that difficult.

And no kidding you don't have to be nice to someone you don't know. But, I can honestly say, I've never wanted to be rude to someone I've never met just because they asked a question I'd heard before. And if I saw someone, who was clearly pretty new, ask a few questions, I'd have no problem answering them to the best of my ability without a snarky attitude.

For the record, the other girls were totally nice and helpful with their responses.
  • 1.  I thought this was what was called lightening crotch...but maybe I'm wrong.  Either way, I have been getting this a few times a day.  But along with the numbness, I get a quick sharp shooting pain.  It's the baby putting pressure on nerves down there.  Totally normal, but way uncomfortable.

    2.  This also happens to me.  Again, it's probably the baby putting pressure on your bladder.  Normal.

    3.  Real contractions, for me, felt like gas or period cramps really, really low.  Braxton Hicks, for me, tighten up my entire belly.  But this can be different for everyone.

I've always wondered what people meant when they said lightening crotch. Makes sense! Thanks! :-)
