Wavering on Induction...

I posted a few days ago about my BP being sporadically high and my Dr. (she) wanting to induce.  Well, today I met with another Dr. (he) in the practice because he's the one on call this week.  He was a bit more laid back about the BP issue, and is not jumping right into induction.  While she doesn't like to see the "bottom number" above 80, he's not concerned unless it's consistently above 90.  He wants me to continue checking my BP at home and at work.  He did mention putting me on bedrest IF it continues to creep up towards 90.  I have another appt on Wednesday.

So here's my thing....I went into this process wanting a med-free birth and am committed to doing so as long as it continues to be the best thing for both baby and I.  IF, my options turn into A. induction or B. bed rest (bed rest wouldn't be longer than 1 week because they won't let me go past 41) what would your choice be?  I REALLY want to avoid induction, but (possibly) a week of bedrest means 1 less week with baby, and there's always the risk of needing to be induced @ 41 weeks anyway.

Ugh - stressed!

  • I personally would avoid induction and choose bed rest for a week.  I would hope that your doctors would let you know if induction is critical and bed rest wouldn't be enough to keep you and your baby healthy.   Give your baby as much time as you can to continue its development in utero.

Good luck!  I know this is all stressful.  I had blood pressure issues at the end of my pregnancy and was advised that I needed an induction at 40 weeks.  It was really stressful, but thankfully, I went into labor on my own before the scheduled induction.  The same may happen for you.

  • If it was one of the other, I would pick bed rest. Could you do a modified bed rest? Go to work and then when you come home, be on bed rest? What does your job entail?

  • Another thought if you do go on bed rest, could you work from home?  And check with your employer.  I work for a municipal government, and there was a certain amount of time I could take off for bed rest where it didn't count against my maternity leave.

  • You may also think about putting yourself on a modified bedrest now to avoid your bp getting higher. Just try to relax and take it easy while you're not at work.

  • Thank you so much for this post.  I am dealing with almost the exact same issue right now.  My blood pressure went up a week ago, I have been on bed rest since then and working from home.  My due date is tomorrow and my doctor is really pushing for me to get induced, my due date is tomorrow.  I am just really worried about the induction failing.

  • I work in sports medicine, so day to day is different, however I am able to modify my schedule to allow for sitting much of the time. It's a little frustrating because the Dr. talked about sitting much of the time at work, resting at home, etc. etc. etc. But then went over "natural" induction methods and said he wants me to be walking, having sex, etc. He did mention a "fine line" between too much activity and too little..... AHHHH BABY....respect your eviction notice ASAP!

Inductions double the risk of a C-section, but keep in mind that the majority of inductions do end in a vaginal delivery. If your doctor is talking induction, you'll want to discuss how ripe your cervix is and the use of a ripening agent before pitocin is administered. The ripening agent can greatly increase your chance of a vaginal delivery.
  • If given the choice I would choose bed rest.  It's true you may be induced anyway, but at least your body will have more time to prepare itself, hopefully making a successful induction more likely and baby will have more time to 'cook' if that's what he/she needs.
  • Can you take some kind of disability or personal sick leave instead is maternity?
