Let's talk birthday parties...

If you have started planning LO's 2nd birthday party, how will it compare to their first? How much is too much to spend? Will you have a theme?

So far, we really don't have much. Although, I have thought of some themes either trains or Mickey Mouse, I am leaning towards the "choo choo" theme. He can't get enough of trains! Also, I looked at the possibility of having it at a children's museum. The museum is pretty awesome and I feel like he would appreciate something like that more this year than last. The cost for a pizza party and room rental along with museum passes for all 30 guests is $565. Would you pay that? Why or why not? I think if I hosted the party at my in-law's home like I did last year I could spend half of that but, I would want to hire some type of entertainment for roughly 10 kids.

This birthday will be especially challenging for us since we will be in limbo with our relocation move. That is why we don't really have the option of a party at our own home, we will also be at least an hour away from all of our family and friends.

  • I think LO number 2 will be more lower key...I loved doing his Dr. Suess party but it was a lot of work. and I think may every other year I will throw a bigger party. (and I am due with number 2 feb 8th and LO #1 turns two feb. 12th) so we will see how much energy I have :)

You're thinking about birthday parties? Shoot, I have to do the vast majority of DD's Halloween costume (so far all I've done is cut out the pattern), figure out what in the world she's getting for Christmas, and then we might think about her party. Way to go having things in order so you can plan ahead.

We kind of have to be so organized this year since will be in the midst of a relocation/move with H's job, but thank you! I totally envy your talent of being able to sew LO's costume!

Love the choo choo idea! Conductor overalls from Osh Kosh would be a must for that! Does the museum have a party room or would you just be touring the museum as a group? The price is a little steep if the party part isn't included, IMO.

We are doing a farm theme party. I wrote up DS's chalkboard last night to say "baa baa, moo moo! Our little farmer is turning 2!" I'll dress DS in overalls and his cowboy hat next to it for the front of the invites. We went all out for his first birthday, this one will be low key.

We are having it at a local pizza place and the room is free to use. Total for decorations and food we are trying to stay around 400-500 dollars.

The price does include a party room for an hour and a half along with pizza and beverages. We would be on for cake(which I'll make) as well as decor.
    I loooove the farm theme!
And I think I'm pretty set on the train theme, I found wooden train whistles on oriental trading cheap!

  • I'm not big on themes. Her first birthday party was big, but it didn't have a theme. We're not having a second party, we're thinking of just having her best friend over for dinner, and we'll all eat together and then have some sort of cake.

  • Reece's party will be a lot smaller and cheaper this year. Keeping it to family and our best friends. No theme either... simple plates and pizza or something... If you remember, DH gave me so much crap last year for planning Reece's sock monkey party, which might I add turned out AMAZING but it really was way too much work and expensive.

  • We will have his 2nd bday party where he has swim lessons. We will be in the process of moving, plus it's usually freezing cold here and everyone is stuck inside. I'm very excited because he loves swimming. We have a huuuuuge family with lots of kids under the age of 12 so this should be perfect. We will get the entire building for 2 hours and they provide 2 lifeguards. We won't have to really decorate and I"ll just order some pizza and wings, bake a cake and we're good to go!

  • We are also doing a train theme.   We are doing it at my Mom's house.  We are hiring a train thing to come and take the kids up and down the street.  We will also do a jumpy because my son is also into those now too.

Size wise it will be the same but cost us less because we don't have to pay a venue fee.  I just hope it's warm and doesn't rain that weekend.

  • I didn't go huge with his first b'day and probably won't any other year either.  It was just family at our house...but that in and of itself was enough for me.  His first was themed, and this year probably will be too.  We'll probably do trains as well...considering he lives for trains!  I just did some simple decorations, ordered pizza, and cake.  I don't have funds to spend $500+ on a birthday party and I'm not sure that I would even if I did have the money, it's just not my style.  However, if you can/want to do it...then do it.  The museum sounds really fun!

  • Caroline won't get a huge party this year.  We will probably see if we can do something at my parents house.  IF we do a theme it might be Minnie Mouse or it might just be something girly.  My girl has turned very girly recently and will fight me putting on pants but not skirts/dresses.  She also insist on wearing a bow everywhere.

I think $500+ for a bday is a little crazy but that's JMO.  For SD we have bday parties at the skating rink, jump houses, lazer tag, etc and have never spent more than $300 and that included her presents, cake, decorations, etc.

  • I'm debating between a small second birthday with all of our friends or a trip to Disneyland. I know 2 is on the younger side for Disneyland, but it could be fun and at least she gets in free :)

  • We haven't done any real planning, yet, but we're thinking of something much smaller for this birthday. It will probably just be us and his grandparents. We aren't huge on themes, either, but he LOVES Sesame Street anything right now, so we'll probably go with a Sesame Street cake.

  • I don't spend that much on birthday parties.  For Cordelia's 2nd birthday (assuming we won't be moved into a new home yet) we will have it at the local pizza place.  It has a party room and only cost is the cost of the food/pop, which is usually just over $100.  I will have a theme, just not sure yet on what.  She loves Dora and Minnie...just not sure I am thrilled with those.  I might go balloons as a theme, or Minions (which she also loves).  I use Pinterest and go crazy with decor for the parties :)  Also make my own cake/cupcakes.  I really get into that part.  Can't wait until we have a bigger home that I can have the parties at.
