Wake up to feed?

Anyone wake up their baby to feed them even if they are sleeping long stretches? My daughter will be 4 weeks old on Wednesday and I am waking her up to feed her after 6 hours between feedings. She usually sleeps 11:30pm-5:30am. Then goes down again from 6-8:30am. Her last feeding at night she does eat longer than any other feeding so maybe that helps her sleep. Anyone have advice on what age I could stop waking her? I think she would sleep longer for sure if I wasn't waking her but then again I don't want her hungry.

Re: Wake up to feed?

  • I'm going by my pedi's instructions, which are to feed every 2.5 hours during the day and every 3 at night with one long stretch of up to 6 hours. We have to wake her for most feedings except after her long stretch. She would definitely sleep longer during the day if we let her.

LO is 6.5 weeks old but has had some weight gain and BF issues, so her schedule may not be typical for her age. I would ask your pedi and LC (if you have one).

  • If she is gaining weight and has plenty of diapers I wouldn't wake her. My pedi gave us the all clear to let her sleep at her 2 week checkup.
  • My LO is 6 weeks, I have always read as long as baby has returned to birth weight and is continuing to gain there's no need to wake a sleeping baby. If your baby is sleeping really long stretches and is difficult to wake to feed, you should prob call the Dr..

  • I stopped waking once she regained birth weight and wouldn't start again unless she wasn't gaining well.

I feed DD every three hours during the day, and at the ped's recommendation we started letting her feed on demand at night. Normally she goes to bed about 8:30, and is up between 3:30 and 4 to eat. Last night she slept from 9 to 6:45 this morning straight, but ate a huge breakfast when she woke up.

Edit- we were given the clearance to let DD sleep through the night once she passed birth weight.

  • My dr told is to feed every 2-3 hrs during the day and let him feed on demand at night. Our little guy usually goes to bed around 10 or 10:30 & wakes around 6:30. I feel lucky he lets us sleep through the night! In our BF class they told us as long as he eats about 8 times a day, we are good.
