Vaccines, not the usual question

I've never been vaccinated for the Flu or the DTap (pertussis?) but I will be because it is what has been recommended. My question is I'm doing it to pass immunity onto baby but I'm thinking my boyfriend should get both vaccines to so that he doesn't bring anything home to baby and I. I plan to ask my doctor at my appointment in a couple weeks but was just wondering what you all are doing or think about having your boyfriends/husbands/SO vaccinated? (sorry if this has been asked I don't recall seeing anything about it)

Re: Vaccines, not the usual question

  • My DH is having his flu jab at the same time as me other then that we are both up to date.
  • DH is current on Tdap already, and will be getting the flu shot at work as it's more or less required. I already got Tdap at my last appointment and will be getting the flu shot as soon as it's available, either at my OB or elsewhere. OB hasn't said anything, but since DH is going to ANYWAY...I just have to figure out how to get DD in to get HER a flu shot, since she's going to encounter it a lot more than me since she's out of the apartment more than I am normally.

Dh and I always get flu shots. I'll get the tdap per my doc's recommendation, though we're both up to date. We're also asking all grandparents, since they'll be staying with us at within the first few months, to get the flu shot and check that they're up-to-date for tdap.

  • DH will get flu shot. He is already up to date on dtap

Yep, DH is getting up to date. We've asked willing family members to do the same, in a "BTW don't forget to get caught up on those shots before sneezy season!" Everyone is very amenable to it.

    @SailorTink

How did your family react to that? Mine and DH's family haven't took too well to our request.
  • Yep, he's getting the flu shot this week. I need to find out if he needs to renew tdap. We are also the type to never get sick/get shots, but we do it for baby. If the grandparents will be around baby a lot, ask them to get the shots too.

  • DH has to have them both to be able to work, but I'll also be asking my parents, DH' parents, and my siblings to get them since they'll all be in close contact with the baby.

  • My OB recommended that anyone that will be spending lots of time with our LO also get vaccinated. My sister (who is very anti-vaccination, eye roll) was with me and agreed to get them when the risks to the baby were explained. DH gets free flu vaccines through work and will just need T-dap.

  • DH got his TDAP in January, so he's good, but we both need to schedule our flu shots. His parents are getting both, but my parents are currently uninsured (retired, a year away from Medicare eligibility) so I'm looking into low- or no-cost options for their shots. Our families live not so nearby though and visits won't be frequent, so I'm not too freaked out if they can't get it.

  • Yes your boyfriend should get both too, sometime before the baby comes. And any other family members who will be spending any appreciable time with baby.

  • I just got both and had my ob tell DH why it was important he get his. He was resistant to getting the flu shot since he's never gotten it before. Needless to say, my doctor talked some sense into him.

  • My family has been very open to getting Tdap and understand why and of course my husband is on board. My ILs got the Tdap when our niece was born last year, so not worried about that. We all get the flu shot anyway, since my mom has MS and we don't want to get her sick.
  • I wasn't even thinking about it. I should probably bring this up with SO. I want to say my mom already gets her shots and I know my sister and her family do. My dad doesn't and won't (no biggie he's an over the road trucker and never around) everyone else we'll just see briefly after LO is born and again at christmas. Other than that I want to say we're set.

  • I won't have DH get DTap again, only because he has had it within the last 5 years, so he should still be immune.  He will get the flu shot.

If he wasn't already immune to pertussis, I'd definitely have him get the DTap- it is recommended for your spouse/ childcare providers and anyone who will be around LO a lot in the first month or two.
  • My husband got both after my last appointment. Ran downstairs to the pharmacy in the hospital lobby and got one in each arm. Our extended family that is going to be around the baby are all getting flu shots.
  • DH got his TDAP at the beginning of the month and will get his flu shot in October.  My parents are close and will see LO a lot so they will be getting the TDAP and flu shot as well.  My mom works in a hospital and my dad works with children so it was a no-brainer for them.

  • Thanks ladies. I never even thought about asking the grandparents but I will now.

  • MH, my parents, and my ILs will have both this season.  I got my TdAP at my last ob appt, and i'm getting my flu jab today.

  • MH will get the flu shot and will check to see if he needs the TdAP shot too.  He got it 2 years ago when LO#1 was born so if its an every 5 years thing, he will be very happy to hear that!

  • My family is all up-to-date on TDAP and most will probably get the flu shot as well.  My sister is terrified of shots (only gets necessary ones), so she may put up a fight about it, but she was willing to get one last winter when our grandma was very sick.  I'm not sure if DH's family gets the flu shot or what their status is with TDAP, but we don't see them too often since they are all out of town, so DH and I will discuss it if we feel like it may be an issue.
