Nervous to take LO to my OB appointment

I'm extremely nervous about this for some reason.. Some days it's PACKED in there and I would hate for her to be screaming. She's just over 2 weeks now, usually the first Postpartum appointment is at 6weeks but I've had really high blood pressure so I have to go in tomorrow morning, and don't have anyone to watch my daughter.

I'm also breast feeding and really am not comfortable at this point breast feeding right beside all these strangers, I know I really shouldn't care. I haven't purchased a pump yet either so bringing a bottle is not an option.. What is she has an explosive poop? (There's really no place to change a baby at my OBs office) Ahhhh.... So nervous, can you tell I've been cooped up in my house for 2 weeks? I took her out for the first time today to my in laws, but that is totally different than the doctors office that may take over an hour to be seen.

Was anyone else nervous about taking your LO to one of your appointments?

  • When you get there and check in ask the receptionist if there is somewhere you can nurse and change the baby. At the very least they may call you back sooner if they know you may have a hungry baby in the waiting room!

  • Thank you it's worth a try asking, although this place is absolutely tiny and they only have the one bathroom when they call you back to give a urine sample, there's no counter in there either to set her on. So strange that it's so inconvenient when they know the postpartum appointments will probably be "mother & baby"
  • I would just recommend planning as best as you can. Hold out feeding her until right before you leave for your appt. feed her and get her good and milk drunk and she should be good for a while. Do you have your own car? If so, you could always use that as your changing spot or if need be, turn the a/c on and nurse her.

You are probably just over thinking it. I did and it turned out fine.
  • You're right I am probably over thinking it. I have to share the car with my boyfriend and he has to work so he will be dropping me off, which is another reason I'm nervous. I would feel so much more comfortable knowing I can take her to the car if worst comes to worst.
  • They are an OB's office. Don't worry about it. Also, you can nurse/change her in the exam room. I haven't been to the  OB yet, but the pediatrician has always let us hang out in the exam room after the appointment to nurse. The nice thing about Dr's offices is that every room has a sink in it so you can wash your hands after you change the baby if you change her in the exam room.

  • Are they just checking your bp? Italy be a really quick appt. If not, and LO gets fussy, just ask if they have an empty room for you to nurse in. Take an extra blanket and if you have to change her, do it on your lap or on a chair. I promise, you aren't the first to take a newborn in there!

They've seen it all! One of my friends actually had to nurse through her 6w pp exam. Feet in the stirrups, baby on the boob. Yeah, they've seen it all!!!

  • Of all drs offices, ob's offices are usually baby and kid friendly. Babies are their business. If you need to nurse, ask if they have a exam room you can use. Try not to stress about it. Stress can't be good for your blood pressure. BTW-when I was a ftm, I was nervous about my first outing alone with LO.
  • I understand your anxiety...I get extremely nervous any time I know I have to take DS out by myself. Like other PPs have said, just do your best to feed LO right before you go, and make sure she has a fresh diaper on. It is also definitely worth talking to the receptionist when you get there to see if they can help you out in any way. Try not to stress...it will be fine!

  • You have probably already had your appt and I hope it went well. For future appts you should try to make them first thing in the morning. That way they aren't running behind and you won't be kept waiting so long. That is what I do when I have one of the kids with me.
