Does/has anyone put their baby on a feeding schedule? I might have to try for my whole family's sanity.... Of course if LO is hungry before a set time I will still feed him, but I think it might be worth trying. My 2 year old was strictly bottle fed (breast milk and then sadly formula), so he was pretty much on a schedule.
Agree. Breastfeeding works best when baby is fed on demand. What struggles are you having that you feel a schedule might address? Maybe learning to nurse in a carrier so that you could be hands free as needed would help?
Well he had been eating predictably and then today and last night he's been sleeping like 5 and 6 hour stretches. I'm worried about my supply and my boobs are so engirged. I'm scared to pump and make things worse and I know I shouldn't wake him.
We do the baby whisperer's easy method, plus other times as needed, but now that DD2 is a month, we can stick to it and it gives us all sanity. Had great experience with it with DD1 as well and helped is have calm LO and parents!
If he's sleeping longer stretches at night, your breasts will get the message in a few days and slow down production then. You can always hand express a bit if you are uncomfortable. He shouldn't be going 5 hour stretches during the day without eating (not sure if that's what you meant or just that he was at night?). How many times a day does he nurse?
Yes 5 and 6 hours today. He usually nurses between 9 and 13 times per 24 hours. I don't want him to get too much though. He is already a whopping 13 pounds, 5 pounds up from birth weight lol. But like today he hardly nursed and then nursed every hour from 4 to 9 pm.
At one month it is really hard to have a rigid, strict schedule. We did a rough schedule though and it really helped. I nursed LO every 2-3 hours during the day and then right before bed. I still feed mostly on demand as some sessions she probably took more than others.
Thank you all. I am going to track his feedings more diligently for a couple of days and try to get a little bit more predictability for myself and adjust our routine around that. My 21 month old needs routine now more than ever and it has been rough - this is the first time in his entire life that I have not had him on a routine. I feel much better now with this plan.
