Pregnant after a Loss

Failed my 1 hr glucose...worried

I took my 1 hr glucose test at 29 weeks and failed miserably with a 169 (needed 140). I take the three hour on Tuesday but am super worried that I have GD, which it seems increases the risk for still birth and other complications. I just don't want to spend the last ten weeks of my pregnancy worrying. My doctor told me there's no need to change my diet unless I fail the three hour, but I am kind of freaking out as I don't want to hurt LO. Of course and I took the test rather late in pregnancy and so could have been spiking sugar levels for weeks without knowing it. Is 169 freakishly high? Does anyone have pretty stories about passing the 3 hr test?

Re: Failed my 1 hr glucose...worried

  • I took the 1 hour at 28 weeks and failed, and took the 3 hour twice (got ridiculously sick the first time around) and passed just fine. As not good that GD is, it is very common and manageable.

I'm sorry you have this burden of worry right now, but try not to assume the worst.

Thank you. I am glad you didn't have GD but sorry the glucola made you sick. It is pretty intense! I definitely felt a little lightheaded afterwards. Thanks again for the story and the good advice.

  • I failed my 1 hour and then failed my 3 hour.  I took it late, too.  I had GD and managed to control it with diet alone.  It also slowed down my weight gain.  I'm not happy I had it, but it was really no big deal for me.  I'm only about 15 pounds overweight when I'm not pregnant, but it seems that weight isn't the only factor in whether you get it.

I hope you don't have it, but it's not that hard to control for some if you follow the diet, as I did.  With baby #2, I have to take the 3 hour around 10 weeks.  SUCK!

  • *HUGS* sorry you're dealing with this :( no experience here, but it seems to me like a lot of people fail the 1 hour and are fine with the 3. My clinic doesn't even bother with the 1, they go straight to a 2 hour.

  • Don't panic.  It's really going to be ok no matter what the outcome of the 3 hour test is.  169 is quite high, but remember this is a number taken right after you consumed the glucose drink.  I have GD every time I get pregnant and it gets earlier and earlier for me.  I was already developing it the last time I was pregnant and I only made it to 10 weeks!  Anywho, it is very manageable and the doctors will monitor you and your baby more closely to make sure everything is ok.  If I were you though, I would watch my sugar intake and eat small meals throughout the day to maintain steady blood sugar levels even if you pass the three hour just to be on the safe side.  Good luck!  You and baby will be just fine :)

Yeah, GD is not like Type II diabetes.  Weight is not the issue; it's the placenta.  Genetics also is a factor.  My mother had GD with all of her pregnancies and so do I :/  Neither one of us are overweight.

  • I failed my one-hour with my angel [miserably] and barely passed the 3, but I passed. His loss had nothing to do with potential GD or anything like that, and I passed with flying colors with my first...so I'd try not to worry. I know that's easier said than done, though! I know several women who had GD and now have beautiful, awesome kids. :)

  • I had GD with my angel and have it again this time around.  (what happened to Corbin had nothing to do with my GD).  I've never heard or read anything about it increasing the likelihood of stillbirths.  Is it a pain?  Yes, but it's extremely manageable.  As others have said, you will get extra monitoring due to it just to make sure everything is ok.  I don't think 169 is freakishly high.  I was in the 190s with all my tests and I control with diet alone)

If GD is not treated and controlled it can lead to stillbirth.

  • Hugs. I had GD with DD and had a very healthy pregnancy and baby. I know a lot of ladies that have bombed their 1 hr and passed their 3 hr without issues. GD is a lot more common and can be successfully managed pretty easily for most women. Good luck tomorrow!

  • @Marclene1: that's good advice and very reassuring. I won't lie, I normally tend to eat a lot of sugar and carbs, but I have been trying to do better as failing the 1 hr was a but of a wake up call. Even if I pass the three hr, I need to make better choices.

@BethelGal: I am so glad you turned out to not have GD! Thank you for sharing your story, especially since your numbers were so similar to mine.

Everyone, thank you for responding and for easing my mind. You are all so deeply appreciated. I'll definitely update with the results of my three hour as soon as I get them. I feel a lot better now, having heard from several of you who have managed GD without a problem. Thanks, ladies.

  • I passed my one hour and failed my two hour by a point and trying to do my controlled meal plan the best I can. Unfortunately, my numbers arent exactly what they are supposed to be when I check one hour after eating. Sometimes they are and sometimes they aren't. Although, now I'm freaking out, b/c I didnt know about the stillbirth thing. Yay. One more thing to worry about for my PgAL brain. :-(

Don't freak out! I did more research and it seems like still birth is a concern with uncontrolled type II prior to pregnancy, which some women diagnosed with GD probably had. What happens with GD is that, if uncontrolled, huge sugar spikes can potentially deteriorate your placenta. however, GD alone doesnt seem to carry the still birth risk in studies. Its just a fear/speculation because of the impact of type II on pregnancy. if you are making a good effort, please don't let my panic post worry you. I should have researched more first, but I am a panic now, google later type.

@SoxFan777 they're making you take it week10 this time?  That blows.  We haven't discussed it yet for this baby 2 so I hadn't thought of having to deal with it that early.  Ugh.

Do you still have your glucose meter?  I just keep a log of my sugars and show my doctor and she exempts me from the 3hour that way.
