Prodromal labor hell

This is now THREE weeks of Prodromal labor. Almost every night i get a ton of contractions that hurt like crazy and fade into nothing. I'm so over it.
Anyone else dealing with it?

Re: Prodromal labor hell

  • Yup. This blows. I'm fine until mid-afternoon and then they start up again and go through the night.

  • Yep, Kid #3 too.

I am RCS to I am always teetering on when is enough contractions.

I am going to bring it up to the OB tomorrow, thinking about switching my CS for next Wed to next Mon because this blows

  • Yes! A couple times I thought labor had started because the contractions got regular, but then they just stopped. I've only been dealing with it for a week, and my ob said it could go on for several more! Fun times! :-w

  • I'm glad I'm not the only one...the past two nights I have had very strong contractions that woke me up and kept me up for a while...then poof! they're gone....it is so frustrating!

  • Exactly what I was dealing with last night and the past couple of nights.
  • I read about people going to the hospital with contractions 4minutes apart. I have that EVERY night. Last night they were 2/3 minutes apart and getting stronger. Then after two hours they fizzled into 8 minutes apart. They have been 8/10 minutes apart ever since. I am beyond frustrated.

  • I'm dealing with it too. :( I had 12 hours of painful contractions Fri night, from every 10 mins down to every 4 mins for several hours then they stopped. Three hours on Saturday, several hours yesterday. I mean, I'm due on Saturday so I just want to get this over with!!

  • This sounds terrible, sorry you gals are having to deal with it.
  • Same here. I've been having contractions for almost a month. The past week they have gotten much more crampy and uncomfortable. I get some during the day, but it gets bad at night. They get pretty regular (I don't time them because it'll just make me crazy) and then either stop or I go to sleep and they don't keep me up. It's really exhausting and even when I'm not having contractions I'm sore from all the contractions. DH has a really hard time just sitting back while I'm so uncomfortable and not being able to do anything.

I had a glass of wine the other night so I could just relax a bit and that was helpful. (My doctor told me if you hit this stage it's about survival and to have some wine and relax and do whatever you need to get through.) But it's REALLY hard to deal with the pain all the time and feeling like I won't know when it's actually happening.

Also, my water broke with DD but I never really went into labor and never had contractions that accomplished anything so I'm scared it will be the same this time.

  • Yup..now a nut case! Every night I think it's time..then they go away!
  • Yep. Been here for weeks. Starting to get frustrated and would like them to just go away or have my water break so at least there is a definite course of action.

  • That sounds really annoying. I have a FTM question about this though- if they're getting stronger & are 2-3 minutes apart for over an hour, why are you waiting to go in? Just wondering what I should really be waiting for- I thought I was supposed to follow the 5-1-1 rule....?

In my case ive been checked by my doc and know what the non productive contractions feel like after so many weeks. So they gave me different guide lines beyond the 511 rule

  • Yeah, me too. Very nervous for the real thing.

  • That sounds miserable. I hope that baby decides to make an appearance soon!

I've been wondering what I'll do if I end up in that situation - I keep hearing all these stories about super quick 2nd labors, so I want to make sure to pass DS off with enough time to get to the hospital. If it's just a false alarm, though, it seems like a lot of fuss for nothing. Plus, it'll add to the frustration.

How do you know when to have someone take your older kids?

  • I had this with my last pregnancy. OB told me to drink wine as I needed (no restriction) and take tylenol PM before bed. Warm baths helped, too. I know how frustrating and exhausting it is. Luckily, you'll forget it for the next one.

It all has to come together. My doctor told me to only start timing once I hit the second hour. But when I hit the second hour, they're not necessarily getting stronger than they were in the first hour (maybe they're stronger than the day before, but not from the ones right before). But then they fizzle out. I could go up every time they start to get like that (which is more or less what I did with the first pregnancy) but I don't want to keep running to L&D. They always say you'll just know.

I had timeable BH contractions for about 1.5 hrs (they were coming every 4 minutes and lasting between 1-2 minutes).  But they were not contractions that I couldn't walk or talk through and after that 1.5 hrs they tapered off again.  Before they tapered off, DH had called the midwife and then put me on the phone... basically I think she could tell just from how I was talking that it was prodromal or false labor and she told me to try laying down and going to sleep.  If it was as she thought it was (and as it turned out to be) they would just taper off.  She said of course if they continued and got more intense to then come in.  At the next appt. we had a more in depth talk about when the contractions meant labor and when to come in.  But of course, you can always call if you are in doubt...

  • Had no idea this had a name.  I have been having this happen for about two weeks.  Every night when I should be cooking dinner until my girls go to bed (about three hours) I have contractions and then BAM, nothing.

    Soooo lame.
