Anyone else gain too much?

Does anyone else feel like they've gained too much weight? I'm trying to keep my eating healthy but at this point I've already gained 10-15lbs which seems like a lot to me. Feels like a lot and doesn't make me feel good about myself. I'm pretty sure I gained it when I was just eating what I could as a matter of survival during my morning sickness weeks but now I'm super hungry all the time and I'm afraid I'm going to gain way to much for the whole pregnancy. I have a hard time keeping weight off normally and I know it's gonna be a struggle after baby is born but I don't want it to be impossible. I dunno what to do to slow down this weight gain and still feel like I'm eating enough.

  • As long as the doctor says you are fine, don't worry about it.  Everyone's body is different.  Maybe your weight gain is more rapid now, but will slow down later.   I am in the opposite boat!  I lost 6 pounds in my first trimester and have only gained 2 back.  My doctor says to not worry and I will just be gaining more weight later on in my pregnancy.
P.S.  Good luck with Cross Fit.  That stuff scares me. lol.
  • I gained 12 during first tri but have since plateaued. I'm sure ill have gained more than I should by the end of it but as a pp said, I'd rather gain too much than too little.
  • I had the exact opposite I barely at anything during nausea so I lost, but I was told to only gain 10-15 total, so not that I'm eating again I'm a little worried. Especially since I don't really work out or anything!

  • Don't beat yourself up. You just can't. It doesn't help you. Just focus on what you can do today. When I find I'm having one of those negative days I hit the grocery store and stock up on fruits and veggies and make a concerted effort to walk 15 minutes. My thinking is if I gain a ton of weight on nutritious food then my baby is just that much healthier :)

  • With my last pregnancy I focused so much on the scale, it drive me crazy. I didn't gain a pound until I was 20 weeks and I was freaking out that I wasn't gaining and then from 26 - 30 weeks I gained 12 pounds, lol. You will have minths you gain a little and then you will gain a lot. It's all good unless your doctor is concerned.

  • last pregnancy I gained 44 lbs! I am already overweight so I was pretty upset by it. I ended up loosing it all post prenancy with BFing and eating healthy. I hope I can loose anything I gain right away again this time...

  • I've gained 15 I think but last week at my drs appt she didn't say a word. I am ok with whatever as long as the baby is healthy. I can always drop it after.

I am 17 weeks today and last time I checked I was up at least 14-15 pounds. It's normal for me. I was hoping it would be different this time (my 5th baby but it's been 10 years since I was pg). With my other babies I gained between 50-100 pounds!! But guess what - it came off each time. I started this pregnancy 4 pounds heavier (at age 39) than I was when I started my first pregnancy (at age 20).
A few things I try to keep in mind:
    1. I know I can get the weight off afterward
    2. This is a good lesson in not taking myself too seriously
    3. Too much weight gain is significantly less associated with poor fetal outcomes than too little weight gain
    4. I have had 4 babies between 10-11 pounds, all natural, none induced, with no tearing. It's not a big deal. And I am not a big lady - 5'5" and a size 4 when not pg
    5. I quit sugar entirely for a month and it has had no impact on weight gain. I am still gaining 1 pound per week, if not a bit more. Genetics are powerful.
This is so true. I gained 60 with DD (and she was just over 10lbs). I tried to make healthy choices with my normal indulgences here and there but still just kept gaining. The weeks I tried really hard to be "good" I gained as much as the others-apparently it's just what my body needed. It took 9mo to gain it and it took exactly 9mo to lose it (and we found out that day about this baby). I think all you can do is be mindful of making mostly good choices and know that you can lose the weight when this is all said and done. And it's so worth it, so don't beat yourself up!

  • Thanks for all the feed back ladies. It's really a relief to know I'm not just crazy or overeating or anything like that. I guess I've just been worried about my weight for so long that I don't know how to not be. Thanks for all the encouragement!
  • My OB said I should continue to focus on making good food choices day to day, and doing as much activity as my energy level allows. I'm trying not to stress over the numbers but as someone who has struggled with weight her whole life it's really hard not to freak when they keep going up.
  • I've also gained between 12 and 15 lbs depending on the day and time. But seeing as I'm exercising every day ( if less intense than before) and trying to eat healthy foods ( giving into cravings when I need to) I don't feel so bad. I lost a bunch I weight before my BFP and think I was actually underweight . My doc didn't seem concerned about it and neither does my midwife. I figure if I'm healthy and my body is still gaining weight it needs it:)
  • i think i have gained 17ish. i was 130 and i think i am like 147 right now. oops. the baby likes ice cream :)

  • I have gained around 12 I think..I honestly don't know what my exact weight was before pregnancy.. it is usually around the same always. I am coming close to 170lbs and it is scary for me because even at my fatest I was 168. I have been a size 12/14 for the past 3-4 years.

  • If you know you are making healthy choices 90% of the time, then don't stress the weight or the other 10%. Some people really just gain what they are meant to gain.

I changed doctors with my first at 26 weeks because the OB was fixated on my weight to the point where he was personally insulting me on a regular basis. I only gained 32lbs total and was down 27 at my 8 week. My current practice doesn't say a word about it unless there is a dramatic shift that might indicate a problem.

  • I gained more than a lb a week with #1, and lost it all before getting pregnant again.  All 50 of my lbs.  So around 17 weeks last pregnancy I was up 17 lbs give or take.  This time I'm up 7.6 lbs (as of my docs appt). .Last time I cried when I hit 200 lbs.  I don't really want to gain that much again, but my daughter came out happy and healthy, and I was able to lose the weight and get back into good shape in about 6 months, so what's the harm.  I think more harm comes from stressing about the weight to be honest! So long as you're eating relatively healthy I think you're ok :)

  • I'm up 12, it seems to me that i eat easy foods since I'm either nauseated or exhausted. So I totally understand where your at. Being in this stage of pregnancy doesn't help the weight issue. I'm ready to look pregnant and not like I ate the grande burrito platter for lunch.
    ;)
  • Up 6 lbs, but I'm sure I'll gain the next 24 in the last 12 weeks. I love food, but like other PPs say, just make healthy choices more often than not, and don't forget to do some moderate activity (walking, hiking, swimming, etc) 4/5 days a week and you'll be all set. Don't worry about your weight unless your doctor tells you to, you're growing a person who depends on you for nutrients. Do the best you can! ;)

  • I've gained 10-15 lbs already.  It's frustrating because I'm making an effort not to gain 60 lbs like I did with DD, but I'm still gaining like crazy even though I'm eating much better than I did last time.  My doctor doesn't care at all... He has never once commented on my weight in either pregnancy except when I express concern to him about how much I've gained.  I agree with PP that some people just gain more than others.  My mom says she gained 60+ lbs with my brother and me, so maybe it's genetics?  I'm not overweight to begin with, and I lost it all after my first.  It was hard, though, so I'm not looking forward to doing it again.

  • Ive gained 5ish lbs, and was also eating the crappppiest foods during my first tri, just trying to survive! I've made an attempt to start eating healthier when I started to feel better during week 13, but I've still been eating stuff I normally wouldn't eat. I was at a normal weight pre-pregnancy, and my OB told me to gain around 25-35, but that seems a lot to me considering I'm such a shorty, I'm a little over 5 feet. I'm just wondering where the heck 35 lbs are going to go.
