Baby Names

Follow up of the "Rosely" made up name post

Fear Not baby name lovers--Roseley is officially out! Thanks for all of your input.
We decided to draw between 2 options and reach a compromise.
1. Keep Rose as the MN (despite me not liking it) and I get to pick the first name
2. Scrap Rose all together and we pick a new FN and MN all together (despite the major love/life long desire to use Rose that my DH has).
We drew from a hat and option 1 got picked!

We are team green. Last name is one syllable and sounds like Cave.
DS #1 is Gideon
Possible Boy Names for this baby: August Elliott, Forrest Oliver
So help me with thoughts on these possible girl names:

1. Cecily Rose
2. Eleri Rose (*note that this is a legit Welsh spelling)
3. Hazel Rose
4. Adele Rose
5. Penelope Rose
6. Olive Rose
7. Lilia Rose

Any other suggestions? I prefer unique or uncommon (but not weird), slightly old fashioned names that are not in the top 100.
I prefer to avoid any more biblical names to keep our family from sounding like a walking version o the Old Testament.

Re: Follow up of the "Rosely" made up name post

  • So glad you posted again, I was wondering what would become of "Rosley" :)

Of your choices I like Cecily. Other favorites not in top 100 are:
    Liliana
Clara (this was on our short list, simple/short/beautiful IMO)
    Ariel
    Miranda
    Makenna

I really like Cecily, Hazel, and Penelope.

I'm not a huge fan of Eleri.  It's like celery without the C.

What about...  Sonia, Renee, Ingrid, Iris, Anita, Greta, Marjorie or Cora?

I totally love the nickname Rosie.  Would that still be in the running if you put Rose in the middle name spot?

I don't think we would use Rosie as a NN with Rose in the MN spot but I wouldn't rule it out completely.

I have thought about both Ingrid and Iris.
    Is Ingrid TOOOO old lady?
Is Iris and Rose together too much flower-ness?

  • Nice draw!  Rose as a mn will work out great and your name choices are very nice.

Cecily-     feminine and uncommon, will people pronounce it differently?
Eleri-        I prefer this spelling, I want to like this name but I only think of celery
Hazel-      Pretty, easy to spell, classic
Adele-      My fave on your list
    Penelope- Love the nn Penny
Olive-       Super cute, not sure how I feel about it with Rose
Lilia-         Meh, pretty, but not loving it

Your boy names are solid, really nice with Gideon too.
I would love to see Forrest make a come back, now that it has been a while since Gump.

    Suggestions:
    Evelyn, Felicity, Delilah,
    Spencer, Everett, Brady

    The others are NMS.

As much as I love Welsh names, I really don't like Eleri (no matter what spelling). It just makes me think of celery. I think there are a lot better Welsh name choices.
I know Eleri is one of those love it or hate it kind of names! For some reason I love the sound....despite it sounding just like the vegetable. Which totally makes me in the weirdo minority because I know Eleri doesn't usually get much lovin :-)

I also have had a long time love with Makenna/Mckenna because I knew the sweetest little girl with the name....but I know it doesn't get much love! Maybe I should rethink it! I do like it paired with Rose!

I also worry about Cecily getting all sorts of varying pronunciations.

    I love Forrest!
Gideon means warrior but also feller of trees/protector of the trees. I thought it would be a cute "hidden meaning" to have a little brother be named Forrest and the older brother have a name that means protector of trees. I'm a total dork for even thinking of that but I love hidden name themes!

  • Cecily Rose - what about Cecilia Rose?

Adele Rose - maybe Adelaide Rose?  (I am LOVING Adelaide lately)

    Penelope Rose - Love it.

Olive Rose - or Olivia Rose?

I seem to think the mn Rose goes with the longer fn's...

  • Nice draw! I'm loving your boy name options. And I love all your girl name options except Lilia. I like Cecily best and I think Eleri is cute. I love Hazel and Olive, but not with Rose (the color + noun thing feels corny). Some (hopefully new) suggestions: Everly, Livia, Katrina, Prudence, Clementine, Tallulah, Marlo, Carys, Brynn, Bronwen, Maeve, Maren, Lark, Temperance, Jessamine, Leona, Tamsin, Claudia, Viveka, Annika, Lorraine, Verity, Louisa

  • I like the longer names with Rose.. Penelope, Cecily, Eleri, Cecilia. love Cordelia!
  • DD is Cecily Hazel so I know you have good taste ;) She was almost Cecily Rose so that's my vote!

  • I *love* Cecily Rose. That gets my vote (and fwiw, I do love Rose as a MN no matter how popular it might be).

Adele gets my second vote with Penelope coming in third.

Olive and Hazel are two "color" names that are awkward paired with Rose (like you're saying "Green Rose" or "Brown Rose"). And Olive also being a noun (food) paired with another noun (flower) is also breaking one of my own personal naming rules as I find it tends to be awkward too.
  • I like your boy names.

    For the girls --

    1. Cecily Rose   I like this, also love Cecelia
    2. Eleri Rose (*note that this is a legit Welsh spelling)   Not a fan, never heard the name before
    3. Hazel Rose  Like pp said it sounds like a color plus a rose
    4. Adele Rose   Like it
    5. Penelope Rose   Loooove it
    6. Olive Rose   Again don't love the color with Rose
    7. Lilia Rose   Personally I don't like the name plus all I can think of is the song "Lida Rose" from the Music Man (but maybe that's just me)

Good luck! I think Cecily/Cecelia or Penelope are lovely and go well with Gideon.

  • I am loving cecilia rose and am. Thinking of putting cecilia on our list! I also LOVE liliana, even tho I taught a little girl called that (usually all student names are out for me!)
    Good luck choosing!

  • I love the name Forrest. I jokingly threw it out to H and he agreed to it. Then we found out we were team pink so I don't get to use it. Really great name!

For your girl choices I like Cecily Rose but I love Cecilia Rose if that's an option.
  • 1. Cecily Rose - I like this but prefer Cecelia
    2. Eleri Rose - I love this name! Very pretty! I love Welsh names though.
    3. Hazel Rose - Adore! Heads up that there is a movie coming out next year called The Fault in our Stars based on a YA book about a girl named Hazel with terminal cancer. Something to consider with the name Hazel and your child being born around the same time as the movie. I still love the name though.
    4. Adele Rose - Pretty!
    5. Penelope Rose - It's a nice name, but I don't love it.
    6. Olive Rose - I've never liked Olive personally, but it's not a bad name.
    7. Lilia Rose - I prefer Lily or Lilah. Lilia seems made up.

Other suggestions: Hermione, Lyra, Juliet, Elara, Freya, Genevieve, Alanna, Cassandra, Elowen, Aurora, Scarlett, Violet, Serena, Luna. None of those scream biblical to me and I think they would all go well with Gideon in a sibset and with Rose as a MN.

Can I suggest Fabian for a boy? lol... maybe not, Fabian and Gideon Prewett were twins and characters in Harry Potter (Molly Weasley's brothers).
