Book recommendations?

I'm getting my bag ready, and I want to pack my Nook so I'll have some reading to do while I'm in the hospital. But I want to load up some new books before I do that...

I've got a lot of Stephen King, Dean Koontz, Ann Rice, George Orwell, and Tolkein on there already. But I'm not always in the mood for that kind of stuff. I really like chick lit and light mysteries, too... I'm looking for some suggestions for lighter reading, books I can get through in an hour or two (I'm a fast reader).

I'm looking for authors similar to Janet Evanovich, or Sophie Kinsella. Light mysteries with a female lead and a sense of humor are good. I also enjoy books with a crafty theme (Friday Night Knitting Club, etc.), food theme, or strong female bonds (YaYa Sisterhood, Traveling Pants, etc.).

Any ideas?

Re: Book recommendations?

  • I am a fan of the womens murder club from James Patterson. They are mysteries, but they are a fast read and has some good women bonding.
  • Loading the player...
  • This is a teen read, but it's very similar to Hunger Games if you are into that.
The book is called Divergent by Veronica Roth.

    Baby Birthday Ticker Ticker
  • Jane Green has some really good fast chick lit. Jemima J was good...
  • Since you like Stephen king- I really liked Justin Cronin's book "The Passage" and 2nd book "The Twelve".

  • Jen Lancaster!! She is hilarious.
  • "There's Cake In My Future" is a great, easy chick lit book.
Second anything by Jill Mansell- I really liked "To The Moon and Back"
Any of the Brennan sister novels by Jane porter (my fav so far is The Good Woman)

Ok thank you. I thought I was the only one who found this bizarre. Reading while in the hospital was the furthest thing from my mind.

I'm taking a movie that I haven't seen. My hope is that I'm able to work through the contractions by concentrating on the movie. We'll see how that goes.

I'm thinking more for after the baby is born, especially if I end up with a C-section and have to stay a few extra days. We have a small family so I don't anticipate many visitors.

are you breastfeeding?  and don't people have heavy hitting pain killers post c-section?  i had minimal visitors as well and i was still a complete disaster from lack of sleep/pain/new baby screaming at me . and this was only 2 days.

Hmm, well it certainly wont hurt to have your Nook or have books ready to go on there. I definitely was too overwhelmed to think about reading a book after DS was born (with only 3 visitors at the hospital total), but maybe you'll have a different experience.

I will be breastfeeding, and I know that takes a lot of time. I don't know that I'm going to have a lot of time to read, but it doesn't hurt to be prepared with something to do if I do get bored.

As for painkillers, I'm allergic to opioids (morphine and all the other good stuff). So I'm SOL there if I end up with a C-section. Hoping for a natural birth, or as close to it as I can get considering my OB wants this baby out at 39 weeks, but I know that induction puts me at a higher risk of needing a C-section, so I'm trying to prepare myself.

If you're getting induced, you may be able to read the first few hours. After baby is here, I wouldn't plan on it. I had a c/s and we limited visitors and I was in the hospital for 5 days, but you will be all consumed by baby and napping when you can. Oh and also having 87 medical personnel coming in every 4 minutes to check you and baby...

  • Okay, so I'm a FTM, what do I know? I still have plenty of down time now before baby is born, and I'm sure at some point after we get home and get into a routine (weeks, months, whatever) I'll have time to get some reading in.

I appreciate all of the suggestions! I definitely look forward to trying out some of these authors!
  • It wouldn't hurt to have some books around... you can always read them someday!  When I had DD I spent a lot of time on my phone playing games while breastfeeding... so I could have been reading.  I also have had contractions off and on for the past three days... so I've been reading (can't sleep) and finished a book in that time.

I second the Divergent Trilogy!  The third book comes out at the end of this month, I believe.  Along those same lines I'd recommend the Delirium Trilogy.  All of those books are out.  :)

Some of my book club's favorites lately were What Alice Forgot and Where'd You Go, Burnadette.  Well received by all in the group.
    DD #1 Eva- April 2011
    DD #2 Violet- October 2013

  • Better to be prepared then not. When I had my girls the nurses in recovery did not come in very often at all. It was very nice. I nursed the baby, read the paper, relaxed it was great. I even sent DH home for awhile because he was driving me nuts.

I know my experience isn't the norm but I would have loved a book to read.

  • Loved the book Gone Girl!

with the cs I had there was precisely a 1&1/2 hr window when neither baby or I was being.poked or prodded or tested or cleaned or encouraged to walk or staples being removed or food arriving or SOMETHING. the reason I remember the 1&1/2 hr window is bc Amelia had her car seat challenge then so we napped, it was amazing.

    .

As for books, I too would recommend Jane Green, Cecelia Ahern and Marian Keyes. :-)

  • Gone girl came to mind to me as we'll when I read your post! It's an easy read.
  • I really enjoy Katrina Kittle's books: The blessings of the animal was my favorite but Travelling Light was also lovely.
