Do pets know?

So my female cat has always been a bit of a loner. But since I've been pregnant, she's become more and more snuggly with me! Its really cute. My male cat is an AW and his behavior hasn't changed (typical clueless him). I don't know if its a coincidence or if animals can sense that kind of thing. Have any of your pets been acting different?

Re: Do pets know?

  • My two cats will not leave bump alone, my youngest has always been an AW but now she is glued to me 24/7.

  • @KateVA that video is precious!! And nice choice of music BTW ;)
  • My dog was always pretty attached to me anyway but now she will hardly ever leave my side. I think they do know when we are pg, it's so sweet.
  • My dog is horrible everywhere I go she has to go, I will come out of the shower and almost trip over her. My kittys have become more snugly as well, two of them fight for who gets to lay next to me.

  • @KateVA I love this video! :) so precious.

My dog, Lola, is obsessed with me since being pregnant. And her brother, Jack, could care less. So I'm looking forward to seeing how they both act when baby comes home.

  • Both times my dog was the first "symptom" that tipped me off that I was pregnant lol. Dead serious, like the second the poppy seed implanted he got crazy protective immediately both times, before I tested.

  • I think they know. I've noticed differences in my two dogs lately. My big dog doesn't jump all over me anymore and my little dog is more snuggly. I'm not sure if they sense or smell something, or if it's just cued by my behavior being more protective of my belly.

Also, in the first tri when all I did was work, come home and nap, get up for dinner, then go back to bed, they definitely settled down. I would come home from work and let them outside, then they would come right back in and just knew it was nap time for a few hours until daddy got home. I just love them!

Let's see if I can attach a pic...

My pup Messi is in between. Some days he comes and puts his head or paw right on my belly, but other days I don't think he knows. I'm so interested to see how he will be when LO comes. I feel like he will be really interested and gentle, he's such a sweetie.

  • My two dogs know, when then are having private tummy time if any other animals come around they will growl. My cat is also more snugly. All three of them don't mind getting kicked either.

  • My dog cat and horse all know! My horse is usually the one getting bullied by the other horses but since I got pregnant he won't let the herd he lives in near me and his usual rubbing on his head me has gotten a lot gentler and he just rests by my bump. The dog sleeps in between my legs(no need for a body pillow here lol) and keeps his nose on my belly and the kitten constantly sits on my bump/boobs and just purrs at it. They also think its hilarious when Kaleb kicks them and lick my belly then. I also cannot even go pee without the dog and kitten right there waiting! I guess they are getting me ready for no privacy ever again!
  • My pup has also always been an AW but he is alot worse since I've been preg. He sleeps right on top of me qnd Once he even thinks I'm awake he insists on coming and laying on my neck snuggling with me. He'll even push my phone out if the way or lay on top of it so I can't see it. He also does this thing where he reaches up and stretches touching my bump (attached picture) I think he knows and he's already jealous!

  • My normally very well behaved dog has reverted back to old bad habits- biting DH's pant legs mostly, and he actually peed in the baby's room the other day! He hasn't peed inside the house since we brought him home at 10 weeks old, over a year ago. Yet he has never bitten my pant legs, and does seem more gentle with me than normal. He definitely knows something's different with me. I only hope this bad behavior stops when LO arrives but I'm a bit worried that it's only going to get worse. I just have to be sure to still give him the attention he deserves, if possible.

  • My cats could care less. Especially my cat who had a litter of kittens, she's like "bitch please, I popped out 6" although the other day when I had really awful pains, she laid with me and nuzzled my stomach... So maybe she cares... Just a little... Otherwise no real changes in their attention.
  • My dogs knows that I'm pregnant since the beginning.. The younger one gets (3yrs) closer and always snuggles close to my belly and laid there.. Follows me to kitchen and other rooms.. Here's the piccy of both dogs on my lap the other day..

  • My two cats could care less. My two dogs both definately know. They've always been my babies and very attached to me anyways, but they are even more clingy now. They fight over which one gets to snuggle with me on the couch each night by pushing one another off. Also, my older one has become VERY protective over me. He will not let any other dogs within a 10ft radius of me. He actually attacked my dads 11yr old dog a few weeks ago (who he's seen weekly his whole life) because I called the dog over to me. My husband had to pull him off of my dads dog and he put a hole through his ear. Needless to say we haven't brought him back over since. It's a little worrisome that he won't get over this.
  • I don't think that animals actually KNOW you're pregnant but I think they can sense changes in your body as far as hormones and stuff go and so I think that makes them act differently. I definitely think they have some kind of sense about it but to know that there is a baby inside of you... eh... I dunno about that.

My dog doesn't act any differently at all, neither does my parents' dog whom I spend a lot of time with. I just figure they're oblivious.
