Just got the insurance statement for my Zofran Rx...

Ok, so I've had three previous pregnancies, all with severe hyper-emesis. Number four here is actually not as bad as the others (I haven't been hospitalized yet, I don't throw up more than once or twice a day, and I haven't lost a huge amount of weight), but I've still been rather sick. My midwife called in Zofran for me as soon as she heard I had a positive test (bless her heart, she knows me well!).

Anyway, I just got the statement. I paid a $5 copay, and insurance covered the rest. For 60 pills (a 15 day supply), my insurance was billed $1,482.60...and supposedly that was the GENERIC!! HOLY COW!

I took Zofran every six hours for my entire pregnancy with my two year old. I'm eyeballing that kid and thinking he's a million dollar baby! Not to mention that, if I had been as sick this time as I was with the others, my midwife talked about trying the Zofran pump (which is basically like the insulin pumps, so its implanted into your body and gives you a low dose all day long). How freaking much would *that* have cost!?!

I find myself wanting to send a thank-you card to my insurance (and telling my husband we can NEVER get out of the Guard )

Re: Just got the insurance statement for my Zofran Rx...

  • My five day script, 3 pills a day, so 15 pills was $174 before they ran the insurance. Ridiculous!

  • Jeez. It's like swallowing gold. Shame there isn't a black market for that stuff :P

  • I hadn't even looked at the cost before insurance on my RX. Holy shit. I feel really grateful I have insurance at this moment. I don't know how I'd survive without my Zofrab.
  • Yeah - I'm paying cash for mine!!!

  • Yup at the hospital I work in they try not to chart Zofran unless it is for cancer patients due to the cost. I asked the pharmacist yesterday about taking it but she advised against as the only class a drug tested for pregnancy was maxalon and Zofran is classed as a b drug so no extensive trials have been done. Now I'm worried as I have took it a few times for morning sickness. But I'm figuring if doctors are prescribing it it must be ok!

  • Yes, I work in a hospital and we give it often but it's way expensive.
  • My initial blood work for this pregnancy was over $1, 900.00! Crazy!

  • I found it online for about $1 per pill for the 8 mg kind. I have not tried to order it yet, though. I still have about 30 pills left. I am trying to ration the ones I have leftover from my first pregnancy and only take one when I am really bad off.

  • Costco has it for about $30 for #30 of the ODT 8mg. You don't need a membership to get it either but it might be less with a membership.

  • I got my Zofran scrip called in on Thursday last week, I picked it up, 20 pills (about a week's worth) retails for $164.99 for the Generic.  Whatever pharm you picked yours up at might be price jacking, ouch!

  • I am so thankful we have our Tricare insurance too! The cost of some of this stuff is just off the wall!

My daughter has been taking it like candy and couldn't keep anything down without it.
I've stuck with the unisome (generic store brand) and have been doing ok. We are bothe Tricare, too, so it is nice getting those EOB's since we are both seen on the base.
  • It's horrible. I'm on Lovenox and Zofran. Lovenox is like $91 per shot and I take two a day. :| I'm sure my insurance hates me.
