Bowel prolapse

Scary thing happened earlier today.

DS has been having almost runny bowel movements lately and more frequently that when he first started on solids. I blamed it on me being pregnant and my breast milk changing. I've read it can affect the baby currently feeding.

Today, on his third bowel movement I opened his diaper to liquid poo and a 2 inch piece of bowel. Needless to say, I FrEaKeD!!

It retracted within about 10 minutes, but you should have heard the kid screaming until it did. As soon as it retracted, he was a happy camper again.

I'll be making an appointment to see his doc on Monday. I am hoping it doesn't happen again, but I'd like to talk to the doc anyway.

Anyone else had this happen? What did the doc do, if anything?

Re: Bowel prolapse

  • Ditto on the ER run. Super scary! Good luck at the doctor, and I hope that LO feels better.

  • Yikes! I've never heard of that. Based on what we went through with ds1, it may be that your son is severely constipated. The liquid is just what is leaking out around the hard stuff. We had to go see a pediatric GI to get him regular again (he was older though -- around 5).

  • ^wss that should not happen! I am not one to rush to the ER (I work in a Peds ER) but that could be something serious. I would at least have called my pedi right away.

  • I'm sorry! That would have been so scary! Did it look kind of like a hemorrhoid? I'm scared to Google! Anyway, glad he's ok.
  • I was about to go to ER, but it retracted while I was grabbing my wallet and keys.
I've seen it before, having experienced it myself. And I googled to be sure.

Our doc's office doesn't have an emergency/weekend number so calling them will get me nowhere.  There is a recording that says wait til business hours, or go to ER. :(

It sort of looks like a massive, massive hemorrhoid.  Not a pleasant thing to see.

He's had mostly mushy poos, so I don't think it's constipation, but since grandma was babysitting him I have only a vague idea of what she actually fed him.
    I guess time will tell.

  • I love how calm you seem in this thread while I am pretty sure you were not so calm in the moment! I am pretty sure I would been all over crazy and I am usually a pretty calm individual.. when the baby has blood coming out of her eye at 3 months I was all.. hmmm well ok she seems to be ok with this lets just see what happens... but organs coming out of the body... um wow

  • Yeah that would have freaked me out. I hope the pedi on Monday can give you some insight to what is going on. I would be pretty ticked if I found out grandma was feeding LO something she shouldn't be.

Do your insurance have a nurse line? I know some do, you might want to check and see for future emergencies.

  • @persephonerose
I forgot insurances even do that. I'll have to check.

I'm beginning to think it is constipation like several of you have suggested.
His stools were normal a week ago, then slowly changed to (the last 2) were liquid. He has lots of belly gurgles, passing some awful smelling gas, and been up 3 times tonight.

I realized grandma discovered Baby Mum Mums. Banana flavour.
Not sure, but after googling, several people seem to think those thing constipated their babies. Grandma had a box upon arrival Sunday at my house. I just found out tonight that she said she ran out of them on Tuesday. I'm guessing he at a whole box of then.

She really doesn't know the meaning of "in moderation". He doesn't eat rice cereal so I don't know if that would have stopped him up or not.
She was thrilled that he liked them, so I'm sure that's why she gave them to him so much.

Thankfully I can control what he's eating for the next several days.

    I'll keep everyone posted.

D LOVES baby mum mums, but I do find they slow down his bowels a bit. So I try to space them out.
Hopefully some fruit can get your LO's bowels back to normal if he is constipated. FX for you.

  • How scary! You sound like you were so calm! I'd be freaking out!

Sounds like you may be onto something with constipation. I'm hoping that is it and once it clears none of that scariness again!

  • Ya, I'm calm now, but yes, I was freaking at the time.
I was waiting for a repairman when DS pooped. As soon as I opened his diaper I called DH and said cancel them because I'm going to ER. But when I checked again a few minutes later it had resolved.

We are definitely upping the fresh fruit intake today and for the next few days. Cutting out foods that constipate and getting him back to normal (hopefully).
At least he is still a happy boy. (Probably why I never suspected a problem)

Grandma isn't watching him until Thursday this week, so hopefully he is back to normal by then and I can inform her of the situation.

Thanks everyone for the input and support.
    :)
  • Holy buckets. Poor baby and poor momma!

  • Yikes! How scary! Glad he's okay. If he's not used to processed food like Mum Mums then I can see how it could really mess his stomach up from eating them, especially that many. I've heard that rice cereal constipates babies so it makes sense that those would. Keep us updated on how he's doing.
