Bottle Nipples for Breastfed Babies

Hi ladies...I posted this on the Breastfeeding board too but I thought maybe you could be a resource too...

I'm a FTM due in a few weeks and I have a question about bottle nipples.

I'm planning/hoping to breastfeed successfully, but I want to have the option to pump and bottle feed as well.  I was wondering if you could tell me about bottle nipple size (like flow level?) appropriate for babies who are also breastfeeding.  I tried doing some internet research, but I'm just confused.  Sorry if this has been posted before...search didn't help much either.

Thanks!

Re: Bottle Nipples for Breastfed Babies

  • We use Avent Natural. Use the slowest flow nipple possible.
    Lilypie First Birthday tickers
  • It says on the package. For example, dr browns level 2 is for 3+ months.

Those levels are for formula fed babies. If you are breastfeeding, you should always use the slowest flow possible to mimic the milk flow speed they get breastfeeding.

    This!
I was told to always use a slow flow nipple if you BF. Babies can get frustrated at the breast if they have to work at BF while the milk flows easily through the bottle. I plan to stick w NB/ lowest level nipple throughout.
  • Thanks ladies! That's exactly what I needed to know.  Much appreciated!

  • I rarely bottle fed since I had a lipase issue and am a SAHM, but DD loved the Breastflow bottles by The First Years. They are easy to clean and work like a breast.

  • Dr. Browns makes a preemie flow nipple. We used that with DD until she was a year old.
  • While I was breastfeeding I used breastflow bottles
  • ComoTomo bottles were awesome and they're supposed to be just like breastfeeding. Your LO has to make the same movements, etc to get the milk out unlike other bottles where they can just suck and the milk comes out.
