LO is 6 weeks old and has been nursing since birth. We've had issues with weight gain and had to begin supplementing last week. We have been giving an addition ounce of formula after each feeding using the breastflow bottles. We've been to an LC and LO has a flat palate and my nipples were all tore up and supply low (50-55 ml transferred per feeding). Just recently, I noticed LO coming off the breast more during nursing.. Getting frustrated.. Trying to latch back on.. Etc. Should I be worried he's starting to not want to nurse bc of the bottle making it easier for him?
I agree with the above. I'd also add, make sure you are using paced bottle feeding when you supplement. Were you given any tips on improving baby's suck?
I have been pumping at least 4 times a day. The breastflow bottles have been pretty good to use to keep LO working at it.. All others flooded him. What other suggestions do you have for improved sucking, @ncbelle? He's never had an issue latching .. Not sure how to help his suck though..
I don't know for certain but there are things that can be done to help a baby's suck. If the LC didn't offer suggestions, I'd seek a second opinion. I know women who have worked with an OT to improve baby's suck so that might be the route to go.
Yea.. When we were there, we weren't having this issue.. It's a new thing so that's why I wasn't sure if it was related to the supplementing. To note, we had given bottles of breast milk sporadically prior to this. We have a follow up Friday.. I'll definitely be asking them for tips.
