car seat question!

Dh and I just installed the car seat! Taking it to the fire dept tomorrow to get it checked out. (The latch system seems almost TOO easy lol)
Anyway the car seat came with a low weight birth foam. With further reading it said the foam was for infants from 4 to 11lbs!
Obviously I'm not having an 11lb baby...is the foam necessary to put in then?
They should just call in newborn foam insert then...sheesh.
What is everyone else doing/suggest?

Eta: its the britax chaperone car seat

edit again: even though we are taking to get it checked...is there supposed to be slight movement to the base with latch?
we followed the directions and tightened is as hard as possible but it seems to slide very slightly on the seat when I push on it.
I'm picturing that it should be cemented to the seat but wtf do I know?

Re: car seat question!

  • I would take it to the hospital. You're baby may be big enough not to warrant it lol but chances are you will need it.

  • The gals that did my car seat check so no more than an inch of movement and the from their website it says this regarding the foam:

"Low birth weight infant foam to be used with CHAPERONE Infant Car Seat. Low birth weight foam is used for infants weighing 4-11 lbs (1.81-5 kg) to achieve a snug fit of the harness around the child."

    I would use it.

  • When we had ours installed by the fire department they said that it needs to have a little movement but only an inch from side to side( like everyone is saying) because in the case of a wreck it gives a little and it won't make baby feel like they just hit a wall. That is what the fire department here told me.
  • We used the foam until she outgrew it. You'll be able to tell.

  • Always test for less than 1" of movement side to side at the belt path on all car seats. Good luck!

  • Have my car seat all put in and it was checked and good to go. My question is.
Does any one else not seem to have the room for it in the car. I have it behind the passenger seat because it takes up so much room that your knees are up to your ears. (it's a Graco snug ride infant car seat)
Does anyone know of a good car seat for smaller compact cars? (we have a GEO Prizm that is a normal size)
I drive a dodge caliber and when it is behind my seat my seat only scoots back far enough for me to drive (luckily I'm short), but Jose would not be able to fit at all. It will have to either be in the middle (which seems untrustworthy for some reason) or behind the passenger  seat.

The middle seat is actually the recommended place for the carseat if the seat fits properly in that position.  We are moving our 7 year old out of the middle for the first time this week to instal the carseat base for baby in the middle position.

Smaller cars are hard to have the rearfacing seats in.  We had a Celica when DD1 was born as our second car and we were pretty much knees to the chest in that.  We rarely rode around with DD in that vehicle.  It was "my" car at the time but since I took DD most the time I switched out to the SUV we had at the time and he took the smaller car because otherwise it was knees to the chest practically.

I consulted a car seat tech for our car seat which is installed with the latch system and was moving and they said as long as your base doesn't move more than 1 inch to either side you're fine.

This! You want a little bit of give in the seat vs it being cement tight. If you do get into a crash, some if the force will be taken away by the seat vs. all in your sweet baby.

Thanks you guys. I'll try it out in the middle seat and see if that works. DH and I are both tall him 6'2 and me 5'7. I never thought my car was small till this. lol If the middle doesn't work, I guess I'll be going car shopping sooner then planned.
Haha, really, you never thought your Prizm was small?? :)

  • I have the graco car seat in my highlander and it fits fine but it definitely is taking up all the room back there.
  • Natalie2290 : I drive a VW Beetle and FI is also over 6 feet and I am 5' 6 1/2" . We ended up going with the Maxi Cosi Mico as it has the smallest footprint. It only seems to work behind the passenger seat for us, and we have to go in from the driver's side to get it in and out with ease, but it does fit. I am scared for when we will have to get a convertible monster seat.
