Overwhelmed

Friends and family have been shopping for my baby shower lately since it's next weekend, and they keep asking me questions that I just don't have the answer to. What brand of diapers I want, what kind of stroller, which kind of breast pump. I'm a FTM and I just feel so overwhelmed with all these things I should know by now.
I also just now realized I need to pre register at my hospital, and the next class they offer to tour the hospital is in like 3 days, so odds are it will be full. I have yet to meet with any pediatricians, I still don't have a solid idea what to pack for L&D. I feel like I'm really running out of time.
Please tell me there is someone else who isn't up to speed with all this mommy stuff. Or freaking out like I am. :)

Welcome Lily Anna!

Re: Overwhelmed

  • Did you register at a store? If so, I'd just direct people to your registry. I have barely started thinking about what to pack for l&d. One step at a time!

  • I didn't meet with my pediatrician but it's the one that I went to when I was younger and my brother goes to so we are super comfortable with them and specifically the one who specializes in newborns. I made a registry that I'm pointing everyone to and with the diapers I have been saying that I am going to try a few brands and see what works best. Also as far as maternity ward and preregistration the hospital told me to wait until like week 32 at least :) hope that makes you feel a little less pressure! Keep your head up mama I'm sure that you have more done than you think!

As far as registry questions go, do you have a registry set up so guests don't have to ask you a million questions? Take the stroller for example. If you had registered for one, it's not necessary for someone to ask you what you like if it's on the registry.

For a breast pump, have you checked with your insurance to see if it's covered? Most insurances will cover a breast pump so it's one less thing you or your guests have to purchase.

Hospital tours-We don't have our birthing class/hospital tour until the first weekend of November, so you should be good with that one.

You don't necessarily have to meet with a pediatrician. If you have friends that use a specific one, you could just go based off of that.

I am registered at two places, and the people that have asked were already at the store shopping for me. I registered for more than one brand of thing though, so there would be different price ranges for people.
I didn't even know that about the breast pumps, I will have to look into that, thanks.

I just want to be prepared, especially because I've never done this before, and right now I'm currently living 12 hours away from family. Which just makes it a bit more stressful.

Read reviews on Amazon and buy your items! Or get the Baby Bargains book it will save you lots of time in choosing what to buy. Registering and hospital tour you could probably wait another month on. Finding a Pediatrician is also important now. ( I have not found one yet) Diapers: Huggies are good for girls Pampers if your having a boy. If you buy the wrong kind just return it for different brands. Best bet is to buy smaller packages when stocking up on diapers. Sign up to Amazon Mom to get a good discount on diapers.

I'm a FTM too and have been trying to keep up with everything too and it can feel overwhelming but don't worry you have 2-3 months left! There is a few good posts on the bump with lists on what to pack for your hospital bag, so just search the bump or maybe someone would be kind enough to post a link for you on this thread, I would but I'm mobile sorry. Good luck!

  • Just take a deep breath and try to relax. All of these these do not need to be done in one day.

First tackle the stroller/pump/etc issues since your shower is so close. Read some reviews on Amazon and register one of each. If you can't make up your mind just pick one, you can always return it for something else later.

After your shower, call the hospital and schedule a tour. As long as you do it like a month prior you should be fine.

After that's scheduled, start researching pediatricians. Start by asking friends and family and then decide on one. You WILL need to meet with one prior to having your lo because they need to know who you are for when the hospital calls. You need to tell the hospital who they are because they will come see the baby at the hospital.

After that's taken care of pick another day to research what you need to pack for L&D. A lot of sites have a recommendation list that will get you started.

One. Thing. At. A. Time. It will all work out.

  • I've never heard Huggies vs. Pampers based on sex.  I'm having a girl and using Pampers as of now, unless they don't work for her when she's here.  Buy what you can get the best deal on right now.

My OB/GYN recommended a pediatrician so I'm going with what she says.  I trust her opinion, both as a doctor and a mother so I don't feel the need to interview a bunch of pediatricians.  So you can start your search by asking your doctor.

They told us to do our hospital tour 6-8 weeks before due date so you have time!  You'll also have some time after your shower to return things you don't want or changed your mind on so I wouldn't worry about that.  And a simple google search will tell you what to pack in your bag.

Don't freak out, you'll be fine.  You really only need a couple outfits for baby, a place for him/her to sleep and your boob/bottle (for a little bit anyways).

  • I must've read the diapers/sex thing somewhere. My bad. My friend recently had boy/girl twins and she told me the same thing. Just buy small packages and test which ones work best. I have mostly Pampers swaddlers so far :)

  • Deep breath....I chose my pediatrician based on close friends and family who use this one and all they needed me to do was to tell the hospital who I will use and the hospital will get me connected once the baby is born. Nice and easy!  As for the tour...my hospital's website said they were not offering the next one until the end of November.  I had a little freak out but called the woman in charge of it and she was able to schedule me into the October group without an issue.  So you may want to try to route.  Good luck and try to enjoy these last few months!
  • Thanks for the advice everyone. I just need to stop and take a deep breath. I'm sure everything will work out :)
