My son has SPD and I know anytime he gets sick it throws his sensory system off, which is very typical for SPD kids. My question is to all the SPD mama's, what do you do when your child is becoming difficult to control and having outbursts during an illness. My son does a sensory diet and it usually works, but I can always tell when he is getting sick or not feeling well because he gets more and more difficult, screaming, throwing things, hitting at things. When he is sick I find it difficult to calm him down and was wondering if there are any ideas you guys have that help out. TIA.
Re: Sick kid with SPD, what helps with tantrums?
DD's body gets really out of wack/control when she is sick, making her more frustrated with body control or falling as well as when she does fall it stems her SPD so she will do it more and more on purpose. Along with this though, her body gets more and more tired - so I just play off the vestibular and give her lots of pressure, jumps, weight, swinging and it tires her out which makes her more calm. Then she is more like a typical sick kid after that and lays down or naps.
I usually keep DS home from school even when he doesn't seem that bad. There have been days that he seemed perfectly fine at home (albeit with a cold, cough, etc) and the teacher said to me "oh, he was SOOOOOO miserable!" (he tends to be worse in general at school than at home).
I don't know what advice to give, except to avoid places that trigger him (don't go grocery shopping, for example) and just count on staying home. Also, things that work to help get enough sleep - DS has a heavy quilt-style blanket, we close the shades in his room, he sleeps with socks on.
