Making it over mommy hurdles

There are so many hurdles that we are going through. Big and small. Whether you still have an inside baby or have an outside baby.

I'm pretty sure I'm on top of the breastfeeding hurdle. Not quite over it yet but I'm at the top and on the way down. My LO is three weeks tomorrow and its finally getting a little less painful. I had mastitis and its starting to go away. My nipple pain was beyond unbearable and that's going away too. We made it past her 7-10 day growth spurt and I'm pretty sure the last two days was her 3 week one. (Fed every two hours for 48 hours). I'm sure if I can make this next week it will be easier and I will be more comfortable.

My next hurdles will be DH going back to work and then me going back to work and her next growth spurt.

I just wanted to take time to acknowledge all the hurdles we've made it through and the ones we have to look forward to. I think setting small goals and accomplishing them really helps stress levels.

So, what hurdles have you made it through recently and what are you looking forward to? It can be NBR as well :)

Re: Making it over mommy hurdles

  • Not killing anyone was a big one for me ;) it's been... Interesting with people trying to hold my preemies after I've explained why we don't just pass them around, IL issues, lack of sleep, trying to get 4u4 on a decent schedule, and finding time to reconnect with my husband.

I'm seeing the light for my supply issues which has been a huge, huge issue for me from the beginning.

  • We made it past LO's birthweight finally. She had her first dr appointment and was still 4 oz. under so the dr. had me feed her every two hours and come back in 3 days to check her weight gain. The dr. wanted to see an ounce a day but she ended up gaining 5 ounces all together. I'm hoping my next hurdle is breastfeeding. My right nipple is super sore. LO is 17 days old so I'm hoping it will toughen up soon.
  • I'll join in...I've made it past the first growth spurt as well! LO is 2 weeks tomorrow. I'm feeling overall much better about having a newborn this time than with my first. I think I had way too many expectations of how thing should be with DS1 and it didn't even go close to how I expected!

DS2 has been fussy in the evenings which is challenging at times but has been sleeping pretty well at night so I'm thankful for that!

Now I'm just trying to decide when to introduce the first bottle and when to stop nursing (which I am feeling conflicted about since it seems to be going much better this time).

Hope everyone is doing well but hugs to those that need them!
  • I made it through the 3 week growth spurt but soon will be the 6 week one. I hear life gets much better after that so I'm looking forward to it. I can't wait to have a baby that laughs and smiles because of things we do, not just randomly.

I just made it through the bf hurdle. While it still takes a little time to get him to latch, I EBF him for most of last week and the nipple pain has gone down a lot.

I was the most sore around days 15 to 20. At three weeks it suddenly improved pretty drastically. I hope it's right around the corner for you!

  • I was lucky enough to make it over the breast feeding hurdle in the hospital and I was really proud to make it over the getting peed on hurdle by covering him with a wash cloth at every change.

The next hurdle I would like to get over is getting him to sleep without being in arms so that my husband and I can start getting a little bit of real sleep instead of alternating between staying up for two hours and trading off with each other.

  • One of my hurdles would be my first rheumatoid arthritis flare with an outside baby.

  • We're working on getting over the jaundice hurdle.. And gaining weight back to birth weight. Have another check in with the DR tomorrow and really hoping to get rid of the bilirubin lights so we can cuddle and feed comgortably. I'm thankful for being able to just have her on the light blanket at home and that we didn't have to go back to the hospital, but will still be very happy when it's gone.

I'm still working on the insurance/pump hurdle.. My insurance covers pumps 100%, but can't seem to find me a place that actually carries them...

And tomorrow my mom leaves so we'll enter into the learning to care for 2 kiddos all on our own hurdle. I envision a lot of late mornings to preschool...

  • I have yet to even be able to work on the latching hurdle. I feel like it's my fault though. My breasts are so huge, it's making my nipples smaller, and making it impossible for him to latch. I've been using the shield, but don't want to rely on that forever.

I do feel as though my biggest hurdle I've gotten over is that besides being tired, and chubby, I feel normal again. I'm able to pick up the slack around the house. Just in time seeing as I have to start packing to move next week.

  • I think I kinda got over not being frustrated with the endless crying at nights and being able to keep calm which I think has helped win calming her down faster. Haven't been able to breast feed yet since she gets very frustrated. I've been pumping but want to try it again and also try pumping more frequently so that I don't have to supplement with formula so much. That's the next thing I'd like to get right. I'm not sure if ill keep on trying to breast feed. She's 4 weeks now so if she hasn't latched on yet is there even a likelihood that she will?

With mine it had to be from a DME (durable medical company). I just googled it for local DME and found a couple. The first one I called took my insurance and offered the Medela so I went with that one. It shipped on my due date. But after I ordered they told me it was on back order and wouldn't ship until a month after my due date. Thankfully, something happened and we got it the day after we came home from the hospital. (11 days after EDD)

    Hope this helps :)

I don't know about the actual possibility and don't really have any stories to go by. But if its something you're passionate about keep trying. I would give it too more weeks it might work!!

    Good luck!

Thanks! I might just start calling all of them, I've tried all of the durable medical companies that my insurance gave me, and all of the ones within 50 miles in their provider look-up, and no one carries them. I live in Denver, so it's not like I'm in some little place. Anyway, now some company other than my insurance is supposedly "researching" companies that carry but might have to ship, but I haven't heard from them since. I think you're onto something just calling them yourself! Thanks!!

  • My son has crying fits every night between 8pm-11pm. I end up nursing him a ton, but I think he just has bad gas pains because of how violent he kicks out his legs. Three times we have given him gas drops as recommended by his pedi and it has helped, but I try not to give him anything most nights and it usually passes. Weird.

The first person I talked to at my insurance company told me to look for local durable medical equipment places. I had no luck, so I called the insurance back and talked to someone else.

I got mine through a website called yummymummy. It was so simple. Ordered the one I wanted and at checkout, just added my insurance info. Shipped to my house for free in days. Check to see if that site accepts your policy.

  • Have you tried a nipple shield? My son had a hard time latching, but he nurses really well with the shield. I don't think I would have stuck with breastfeeding if I didn't have the shield.

  • The hurdle that I have gotten through is me being able to sleep at night after I put him down.  The first night we were home I was paranoid and could not sleep because I was afraid something might happen to him while I was sleeping.
We are trying to get over the hurdle of gaining his birth weight back.  He lost 9% at the hospital so he left the hospital being 5lbs11oz.  The next day at his pedi appointment he still weighed 5lbs11oz....atleast he did not lose any weight between those 2 days.  At this point I nurse him whenever he shows any sign of wanting to be fed so he eats between every hour to 3 hours.  Although sometimes he goes through a very sleepy period during the day and will not nurse even when I try to wake him up....if that happens I pump....I think that is why at other times he wants to eat every hour. We take him back to the pedi on Friday to check his weight.
The other hurdle is that he will not latch on the left side without a nipple shied.  He does latch fine though when I use it.

  • @Zmommy2 - see if you can just go buy your own and then submit the receipt for reimbursement.
