Is anyone thinking about birth control?

Before I got pregnant I was on the nuva ring and that obviously didn't work for me. One of my SIL's merana failed and she just found out she is 7wks. I wanted to get the merana after this but now am having second thoughts. I never did well on the pills. I tried a few different kinds and they effected my mood. Everyone I know has gained weight on the shot and to be honest with you guys I have been battling body image issues since I was a teen. What about the patch? I picture a band-aid that after you wear it for a few days it gets lint and other misc fibers stuck to the edge of it... I might just end up dealing with that. It sure would be a hell of a lot easier then going through another pregnancy and caring for another child. Any suggestions, thoughts...? I'd ask my DH to get clipped but I may want another child in 5-8 years.

  • I haven't even considered charting. I like that idea.

  • Have you thought about the implanion? I believe it goes into your arm and gets removed when you're ready.

  • No this is another I haven't even thought about! Thank you
  • I plan on going back on the patch. I love it. I have used it for about 10 years. Only go off it when I want to get pregnant. The lint has never been a big problem. It's stuck on your butt so you don't see it.
  • Thank you for bringing this up! I haven't thought about it at all. I was on the pill before this. Just FYI both my SIL and MIL got pregnant on the patch. I think SIL uses nuvaring now.

  • I am planning on going back on the pill. It worked well for me before we decided to start TTC.

Be careful with the patch as I know of a couple people who have gotten pregnant while on it. It may not stick correctly or may fall off even without you knowing.

  • My friend got pregnant on the nuva ring as well. I'm going back on the mini pill. It doesn't give me the unwanted side effects like the pills with estrogen.

  • I actually second the family planning/condoms. Worked for us. I'm also SUPER wary of hormones because I have several friends who had a lot of trouble conceiving after they went off of them, and also my mom had a lot of trouble with different BC pills. I know a lot of people don't like to bother with condoms, but they're not that big of a deal to us. Just, you know, make sure you're stocked up because we ran out and did it maybe twice without them, and here I am 40 weeks pregnant. :)

I do have a couple of friends with an IUD and they haven't gotten pregnant.

  • We're planning on charting and condoms because my body really changed when on the pills and I want to be able to have another child in a couple of years. I don't think I'll ever go back on the pill.
  • Well if there is no birth control that interests you I would say charting/condoms.

I have always been on the pill and when I got kicked off insurance last March I started charting. I actually used an app on my phone to track my period and it would tell me the days I was most fertile and the day that I was ovulating so DH and I would just avoid that week all together. If we did decided to have sex during that time we would use a condom. This worked for me until I got pregnant in December. The only reason I got pregnant was because I got a new phone and not all the data from the app transferred so I guessed on my last period date and it was off...so DH and I had sex on an ovulation day and I got pregnant. But if you follow it and keep track I would say it should work. Obviously it's not 100% unless you use a condom too but it's another option if you don't want to use any other birth control.

I plan on going back on the pill because I've never had any negative side effects from it and it worked for me. I don't want another baby for a couple years so I figure it's my safest bet.
  • @andjess11 when I charted to get pregnant I used fertility friend, website and app. I loved it. I imagine you could use it to not get pregnant as well lol.

Just remember it isn't 100% foolproof and it is a lot of work!

I'm an NFP girl, too. Successfully held off pregnancy for 3 years until we decided it was time to start TTC. Got pregnant on 1st try...so NFP was obviously very successful ;-)
We didn't use condoms, just abstained when ovulating.

Now knowing how easily I got pregnant...I'm a little nervous to get back into the swing of NFP since
I'm sure it'll be difficult to chart until my hormones are back on track!

Ps- we use sympto-thermal method of NFP...learned in our marriage prep classes as part of the Catholic Church.
  • Got away for a while. Thanks everyone! :)

I'm probably going to go back on the depo shot - I can't remember to take pills and charting is too much work for me. Mirena scares me - I have had several friends lose it and get pregnant

    Edit for spelling.
  • I'm getting mirena and using condoms. I prefer the cleanliness of condoms anyway and since I already have four kids I'd rather have something I don't have to think about.
  • For what it's worth, I was on the pill for a long time, and had no trouble conceiving, we were successful on our first try. I know that's not the norm, but it apparently didn't mess up my hormones. I'm honestly not sure what I'll do because I don't want to be on the pill while trying to breast feed. I was thinking about getting an IUD but need to research it more before I make that decision. Otherwise there's always condoms.
  • I was on the pill for 10 years before TTC and it worked really well for me and had no issues with getting pregnant but now that I am breastfeeding estrogen based pills are bad so I think I am going to try mirena this time around.

  • I finally decided on mirena. I was on the patch the first time I got on birth control and I didn't like it. It would always leave a red square where it had been stuck. I was on the pill for a long time after that (about 12 years) and I feel like it's the reason it took us longer than expected to conceive. My cycles were really messed up when I stopped taking it. I have several friends with mirena that love it.

Taking charge of your fertility (book) and fertilityfriend.com are excellent to start with, (and to continue with) for learning, actual charting and interpreting your chart.
I've used fertility awareness method (charting) for years, first as contraception, then while ttc.
I/we haven't decided what our approach will be. FAM may not be an option for a while BC I plan to breastfeed, so maybe condoms, then FAM? Eventually DH plans a vasectomy, but probably not for a few years. I'm considering an iud, but it kind of freaks me out. Hormonal BC isn't an option for me.
